Job Description

ActionAid International is seeking a dynamic and talented all-round Policy Research Officer who is passionate about African development issues and international economic relations.

The individual must be an activist professional and capable of delivering cutting edge policy and research analysis.

This position reports to the Policy and Advocacy Manager, Africa.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership in Africa by spearheading the development of a regional policy research agenda.
  • Strengthen and deepen policy analysis especially on economic policy related issues; e.g. financing for development, trade, Aid and debt from an African perspective.
  • Build and strengthen the technical capacity of country level policy research, analysis and advocacy work.
  • Generate, document and disseminate the results of our policy work, capturing new knowledge and learning.
  • Assist with the research and development of agency-wide positions and policies.
  • Linking AAI with regional level academic and research institutions in order to further AAI's policy and advocacy agenda towards the development of alternatives rooted in the experience of the poor and excluded.


    We are looking for candidates with a minimum of 5 years experience.

    The position requires a dynamic, self driven, flexible and motivated person able to work in a fast paced environment with multiple accountabilities and minimum supervision; an individual who enjoys team work, possess IT skills and is able to travel frequently.

    The individual must have a proven track record in the field of research, policies analysis.

    Knowledge of African economies; development discourse and current issues and trends is important.

    Previous experience in working on poverty eradication related issues, with or on social movements, and a relationship with the civil society networks will be an added advantage.

    Fluency in written and spoken English are necessary. Working knowledge of French and/or Portuguese will also be an advantage.
