The International Monetary Fund (IMF) Economist Program for Recent PhD Graduates ;The IMF Economist Program (EP) is a three‑year career development initiative designed to build future leaders of the Fund. Participants join teams addressing key global economic challenges, applying knowledge and research to policy work that directly impacts IMF’s 191 member countries.

Programme Overview

The EP consists of two 18‑month assignments, providing broad exposure to regional and country‑specific issues, as well as fiscal, monetary, balance of payments, debt, and related areas. Participants will work closely with country authorities, contribute to analytical and research work, and foster monetary cooperation, financial stability, international trade, sustainable growth, and poverty reduction.

    Eligibility / Requirements

  • PhD completed or expected within one year of joining, in fields such as macroeconomics, finance, public finance, monetary economics, international economics, trade, poverty issues, macro‑climate, political economy, econometrics, or related areas.

  • Strong understanding of macroeconomics and ability to apply conceptual frameworks.

  • Excellent academic record with proven analytical, quantitative, and IT skills.

  • National of an IMF member country.

  • Below age 34 at entry (September 8, 2026).

  • Strong written and oral English skills; proficiency in other languages desirable.

  • Motivated to contribute to global economic well‑being, versatile, collaborative, culturally agile, and willing to travel.

    Selection Process

  • Initial screening of applications and supporting documents.

  • Preliminary interview (campus visit or video), transcript review, and references.

  • Panel interview, writing test, and job market paper review.

  • Interviews conducted October 2025 – January 2026.
