Africa Organization for Standardization Continental Essay Competition;ARSO was formed in 1977 by the African Union (AU) and UNECA to harmonise African standards and conformity assessment procedures, reduce technical barriers to trade, and promote intra‑African and international trade. The Continental Essay Competition engages tertiary students on issues central to Africa’s standardisation, quality infrastructure, and trade agenda.

Theme

“Advancing Intra‑African Trade through Conformity Assessment and Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRAs) — Unlocking the Full Potential of the Cotton‑to‑Clothing Value Chain under the AfCFTA.”

Eligibility / Target Participants

  • Enrolled in an accredited tertiary institution in an AU Member State at the time of submission.

  • Aged 35 years or below as at the essay submission deadline.

  • Open to students of all disciplines.

  • Only one essay submission per student; group or co‑authored submissions not eligible.

  • Must comply with copyright rules and AI ethical use practices.

    Essay Guidelines

  • Length: 1,000 – 1,200 words (excluding references, cover page, appendices).

  • Language: English or French.

  • Format: Word (.docx), size 12 font, 1.5 line spacing.

  • Cover page with student’s name, institution, country, and contact details; essay body anonymous for blind judging.

  • Attach copy of ID/Passport and completed Registration Form (ARSO/CACO/EC/Form 1/2026).

  • Submit via National Coordinator in country of study (not directly to ARSO Secretariat).

    Judging Criteria

  • Relevance to theme – 25%

  • Depth of understanding (standardisation, conformity assessment, MRAs) – 25%

  • Originality, creativity, critical thinking – 20%

  • Practical relevance and recommendations – 20%

  • Structure, clarity, language, adherence to guidelines – 10%

    Prizes and Recognition

  • 1st Place – $1000 + certificate + recognition at ARSO Awards Ceremony.

  • 2nd Place – $800 + certificate.

  • 3rd Place – $500 + certificate.
