Senior Programme Officer, Nairobi - United Nations Environment Programme

Under the overall direction of the Director, Division of Regional Cooperation and the day-to-day guidance of the Director, Regional Office for Africa, the incumbent will be responsible for:

  • Supporting the further development and implementation of the Poverty and EnvironmentInitiative in the Africa region in close collaboration with the UNDP/UNEP PEI team andFacility staff.

  • Supporting the overall execution of the UNEP components of the MDG Achievement Fund(MDG-F) in Africa in close collaboration with the Coordinator.

    Qualifications and Experience:

    Education: Advanced University degree in environment and development related field with a strongpreference for development economics or socio-economic aspects of sustainable development.

    Experience: At least 10 years of relevant and progressive experience in international sustainable development including at least 5 years working with governments and/or developing country field environments. Proven experience with different aspects of project management including development, planning and implementation.

    Language Requirements: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the postadvertised, fluency in spoken and written English, working knowledge of French is desirable.

    Other Desirable Skills:

  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with people of different national and cultural backgrounds;

  • Excellent coordination skills, with ability to work under pressure and handle multiple activities and projects concurrently;

  • Ability to work independently and to participate effectively in a team based information sharing environment; Knowledge of the UN system, including the UN common country programming process.

    Competencies:

    Professionalism: Proven ability to provide seasoned guidance and advice in the development and implementation of programs, projects methodologies and policies covering a broad range ofeconomics, poverty and environment issues, ability to prepare comprehensive reports with respect to key environmental and development issues.

    Planning and Organizing: Demonstrated coordination skills with ability to work under pressure and handle multiple activities and projects concurrently; demonstrated ability to use limited resources effectively, putting up-front risk-assumptions, and applying contingency measures to adjust plans and resources effectively.

    Client Orientation: Ability to identify clients' needs and develop appropriate solutions; ability to establish and maintain productive partnerships with clients.

    Team work: Ability to operate effectively across organizational boundaries; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity, including gender balance.

    Ability to work independently and to participate effectively in a team based information sharing environment.

    Communication: Strong communication skills with ability to express ideas clearly, both orally, in writing and presentational, including ability to defend and explain difficult issues and positions to staff and senior officials; ability to draft/edit a variety of reports on UN policy issues and strategies relevant to own work as required.
