This project addresses the effects of specific desensitisation on allergen-specific T cell populations in people with birch pollen allergy.
The project is based on a clinical trial of desensitization and will focus on T-cell repertoires and T-cell function in the peripheral blood of patients taking part in the trial.
The student will use flow cytometry to study changes in the T-cell repertoire by monitoring alterations in TCR VB families in blood.
The functional properties of the allergen-specific T-cell populations will also be addressed by multi-colour flow cytometry.
These two techniques will be married up to examine the origins of T-regulatory cells within the expanded subpopulations T-cell subsets.
For selected T-cell subsets, molecular analysis of the corresponding TCRVB gene family will be performed by PCR and gene scanning.
Applicants wishing to discuss the studentships informally should contact the supervisors directly via email.
Similarly, further particulars of the projects can be obtained from the supervisors.

Stipends will be paid at current MRC rates. Home/EU fees will be paid and a consumables budget will be made available for each project.
Start date for these studentships will be October.
Eligibility for funding
Projects funded by BSMS are generally open to students from all countries, but fees are usually only paid at the UK/EU rate.
International students would thus be liable for top up fees.
