Director, Policy and Advocacy, WaterAid - Ethiopia

Person Specification:

Essential Criteria

  • Bachelor's degree in social sciences, political science and international relations or related field

  • Understanding of key policy debates around water and sanitation at an international level, and preferably of the current policy environment in Ethiopia.

  • Demonstrated experience in the area of policy and advocacy preferably in NGOs

  • Ability in doing policy and advocacy work in a politically sensitive environment

  • Knowledge of basic research tools and methodologies

  • Experience in capacity building of staff and partners to undertake and implement effective advocacy

  • Ability to analyse information, evaluate options and to think and plan strategically

  • Demonstrated experience of managing and developing a team and the ability to lead and motivate others

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication (written and oral English and Amharic), and presentation skills

  • Proven senior level representation, diplomacy and networking abilities

  • Decisive, solution-oriented, and a creative thinker

  • Proven negotiation, conflict resolution, and influencing abilities

  • Able to plan, prioritize and organize self and others

  • Ability to manage a complex and demanding workload

  • Excellent IT skills, especially programming & statistical software (such as SPSS), and MS Office applications Firm belief in gender equality and sensitivity to HIV/AIDS Commitment to values and working styles of WAE

    Desirable Criteria

  • Masters degree in social sciences, political science and international relations or related fields

  • An in-depth understanding of national and international development issues in particular in relation to water and sanitation

  • Competence in developing and managing budgets

  • Experience of tailoring advocacy messages for a variety of decision-makers and high level audiences

  • Knowledge and experience of donor policy and processes
