KCSE: Alarm as the Numbers of Es Increase

The number of candidates who scored E went up from 33,399 candidates in 2016 to 35,536 this year.


The poor performance in this year’s KCSE has yet again been emphasized as the number of candidates who scored grades C-, D+, D, D- and E increased significantly.

Those who scored C- increased by 14 from 61,026 in 2016 to 61,040, while those with D+ also increased from 80,951 in 2016 to 88,447 this year.

Candidates who scored grade D increased from 112,135 in 2016 to 135,550 this year, while those with D- increased from 149,929 in 2016 to 179,381 this year.

This year, only 70,073 out of the 611,952 candidates — just 11.5 per cent — managed the minimum university entry qualification of mean grade C+.

In 2016, some 88,929 qualified.

The number of those who scored grade A increased by 1 from 141 in 2016 to 142 this year.

Candidates who scored A- reduced from 4,645 in 2016 to 2,714 this year further sending a red alert in the performance.

The number of B+ also reduced from 10,975 in 2016 to 7,344 this year with grade Bs reducing from 17,216 in 2016 to 12,628 in 2017 and B- from 23,745 in 2016 to 19,385 in 2017.

Candidates who scored C+ also reduced from 32,207 in 2016 to 27,860 this year with those scoring grade C reduced from 44,792 in 2016 to 40,474 this year.
