Moi Girls fails to impress again

Moi Girls Eldoret has for the third year running failed to impress in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examination.

The national school in Uasin Gishu County dropped in its mean score from 10.01 to 9.8 in the 2014 exam results released yesterday.

Principal Rosemary Wanaswa attributed the slump to a shortage of staff, among other factors.

The school ranked 24th nationally in last year’s exams. It was seventh in 2010.

In Nandi County, celebrations filled the air after Kapsabet Boys emerged the best in the region, once again.

The school posted an impressive mean score of 11.254, an improvement from the 11.06 the previous year.

Results of some schools in the county were cancelled due to claims of cheating. Some 28 out of 59 candidates at Lwanda Girls had their results in History and Business Studies cancelled for cheating. Other students took to the streets to protest against poor performance.

IMPROVEMENT

In West Pokot, Kapenguria Boys had a mean grade of 9.95, an improvement from 8.72 in 2013. Chewoyet had a mean grade of 9.86.

Ortum Boys had a mean score of 9.56, up from 8.96 in 2013, while Nasokol Girls had the results of 18 of its candidates missing.

Kapsabet Boys Principal Kipchumba Maiyo attributed the good results to discipline among the students and good working relations between teachers and parents. The school had 94 As, 108 A-, 31 B+, 13 Bs, and 18 B-.

At Kapsabet Girls, 22 candidates scored As, 63 A-, 76 B+, 27 B- and 4 C-.

There was jubilation in Bungoma County, as well, after Friends School Kamusinga improved its mean score to 10.0636 from 9.958 in 2013.

Lugulu Girls, Kibabii Boys, Teremi Boys, St Antony Boys Kitale, St Joseph Boys Kitale and Lodwar Boys also excelled.

COULD NOT BELIEVE

In Trans Nzoia, 17-year-old Kelly Virginia, of Moi High School Kabarak, had a mean core of 84 points. “I expected an A-. When my mother told me that I had scored a clean A, I could not believe it.”

The second born in a family four scored 400 marks in the 2011 primary school exam.

“I take this success as an opening to study medicine, which has been my childhood dream,” an elated Kelly said. Her mother, Mrs Mary Mbusya,
criticised the scrapping of school ranking. “How do we measure the quality if we have done away with ranking. It should be restored.”

In Kitale, St Anthony Boys School erupted into celebrations after it topped Trans Nzoia County, with a mean score of 10.8, from the previous year’s 10.5. Of the 250 candidates, 66 scored As, 101 had A-, 61 had B+, 20 Bs and B-.

Principal Cosmas Nabungolo said: “We could not have made it without our oneness of purpose where we aimed at a better score than we had the previous year.”
