Unlike the celebrations of past years, Meru county was silent as the KCPE results were released on Monday.

The candidates, teachers and parents waited as the results trickled in by SMS from the Kenya National Examination Council.

With the abolition of the schools and candidates ranking by Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi, the students, teachers and parents had nothing to cheer or jeer.

The best performing schools in the previous years, Fred’s Academy, Kathigiri Boarding Primary, Amwamba Primary and Mfariji Academy had to compile their results through SMSs from the Knec.

Kathigiri head teacher Micheni Ragwa said their best candidate scored 434 marks.

He said more than 10 candidates scored above 400 marks.

The best candidates in the county are Annrita Gitonga from Kathigiri Boarding and Beverline Mocheche from Salem Academy with 434 marks each.

In Igembe North subcounty, the best candidate from Mfariji Academy, which has been a good performer over the years, scored 414 marks.

Six out of the school’s 34 candidates scored 400 marks and above, with the lowest candidate scoring 319 marks.

Area ward representative Joshua Mithiaru criticised the abolition of ranking, saying it will lead to deterioration of education standards.

In North Imenti, Fred’s Academy, which produced the best pupil in the country in 2012, the first candidate scored 430 marks.
