KCPE candidates score better in religious education, poorly in English

English language, mathematics and religious education are the subjects that recorded an improved in performance in the 2015 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) results.

According to data released by Kenya National Examination Council, religious education recorded the highest performance, with a percentage raw mean score of 70.20.

On the other hand, English composition had the lowest percentage with a score of 41 per cent.

“The poor performance of candidates in English composition is worrying because it means that learners lack the ability to creatively and coherently express themselves in prose,” said Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i while releasing the results in Mitihani House, Nairobi, on Wednesday.

Candidates’ overall performance based on their standardised scores remained relatively the same when compared to the previous year.

This is evidenced by the fact that in the 2015 KCPE examination, the number of candidates who scored an aggregate of 250 marks and above was 455,950, representing 49.14 per cent of the total candidature, while in 2014 the number of candidates with 250 marks and above was 436,814, representing 49.61 percent of the total candidates who took the examination.

English composition has continued to post dismal results, which causing uproar among language experts.

According to KCPE Examination Report published yearly by Knec last year, pupils score as low as two out of a possible 40 marks. - Daily Nation, Friday, January 1st 2016.
