Clash as school mocks exam rivals

Two schools clashed on Wednesday after the release of exam results in Bungoma County clashed.

Students from St Mary’s Kibabii Boys High School hit the streets of Bungoma Town in celebration after they attained a mean grade of 8.5 in last year’s exam.

They marched to Bungoma High School, 4km away to celebrate the results and to mock the school.

Bungoma High School had a mean of 8.3 marks an improvement from the 2013 mean of 7.1.

Bungoma High students were attending a parade addressed by their principal and in anger charged towards their Kibabii counterparts. The two groups of juveniles fought for 20 minutes.

The students from Kibabii were beaten away and fled to safety. Some suffered minor injuries.

The Bungoma students then went on a revenge mission, taking their demonstrations to Kibabii but were repulsed at Kanduyi market after their teachers called the police.

Speaking after the immature scuffle, Bungoma High School principal Samwel Wachilonga accused the rival school of provoking his students.

“This entire unfortunate incident should be blamed on Kibabii. Why did they walk all the way to provoke us? Disciplinary action should be taken against them,” he said.

Kibabii principal Mathews Namunwa apologised. He said the students went out of control in celebrating their performance.

“We apologise. We are very sorry and this will not happen again,” he said.

The two schools have been fierce rivals in sports and examinations.

Bungoma High School’s performance has dropped in recent years but their good performance last
year has only renewed their rivalry with Kibabii. Nation, Thursday 5th March 2015
