Determine how much disk space I have in Linux and Unix?

Linux, Unix, and their variants have different ways of determining the available free space and the capacity of a file, drive, a mount, or network share.

Below is a listing of commands that can be used to determine this information.

Linux command line commands

  • df
  • du
  • ls
  • vmstat

    Free up disk space

If you want to free up disk space on a Linux computer or server, use one of the commands listed above to determine which directories are using the most disk space.

Then, review each directory and delete any files that are not needed.

Determining the files that can be deleted is the tricky part.

Make sure not to delete any files that are required by Linux or programs running in Linux.

Log files and files for program installation packages are the common files that can be deleted to free up disk space.
