Cartography M.Sc. is a four semester Master of Science Programme of four universities in Munich, Vienna, Dresden and Twente. It focusses on a broad education in cartography and geoinformatics.

The four partner sites represent centers of excellence in the field of cartography, recognized at the European and global levels.

The Chair of Cartography of TUM, the Research Division Cartography of TUW, the Institute of Cartography of TUD and the Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation of UT complement each other in an ideal way to provide an exceptional programme with excellent job employment prospects in this interdisciplinary field.

The composition is a complementary approach of the partners’ different research and educational profiles in an area where each partner is a leader in their own country and recognized internationally.

With a very high concentration of scientific competence in cartography and cartography-related fields, the programme is outstanding not only in Europe.

The programme takes place at all four cooperating universities and is completely taught in English.

Students stay together as a group during the whole time and have to spend their 1st semester at TUM in Germany.

Then they have to study the 2nd semester at TU Vienna in Austria.

After that they study their 3rd semester at TU Dresden in Germany.

During the first and third semester, online modules from the University of Twente are integrated in the curriculum. In the 4th semester students prepare their Master’s thesis at one of the four participating universities.

Entry Requirements

We are looking for students who are self-disciplined and show initiative, are independent thinkers but also team players and are interested in art, science and technology.

You are eligible to be admitted to the Cartography programme, if you have:

  • Bachelor degree or equivalent in a related discipline; Already obtained an university Bachelor degree or equivalent in a discipline related to cartography, geo-information, geography, geodesy, geology or computer science.
  • English language proficiency (as the programme is completely taught in English)

    One of the following English language tests can be accepted as proof of proficiency:

    IELTS Academic Module: Minimum score 6.5 The British Council can send it to TUM directly.

    Cambridge Certificates Cambridge Main Suite: CAE or CPE: level A, B or C You are considered to be proficient in English and you do not need to provide an English language test score if:

    You are a native English speaker;

    Your previous (current) university education has been conducted in English. In this case you need an official certificate from your university confirming that the language of tuition was English.

    Selection of course participants will also be based on:

  • Motivation and talent;
  • Academic qualification and academic potential (knowledge in cartography, computer science, mathematics, geodesy, other geo, natural and environmental sciences);
  • Study progress and results obtained in previous education (e.g. based on GPA);
  • Letters of recommendation;
  • Practical experience in the geo field will be an advantage.


    The Cartography M.Sc. has been selected for Erasmus+ by the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) of the European Union.

    There are highly remunerated Erasmus Mundus Scholarships available for the best students.

    Erasmus Mundus scholarships for partner country students

    Scholarships for the four semester Cartography M.Sc. programme are:

  • Contribution to travel costs of 2 x 3.000 € (6.000 € in total) per scholarship holder travelling more than 4.000 km OR 2 x 2.000 € (4.000 € in total) per scholarship holder travelling less than 4.000 km plus 1000 € in total for installation costs
  • Subsistence costs of 1.000 € per month, 24.000 € in total. Contribution to subsistence costs must NOT be given to scholarship holders for the study periods (study /research /placement /thesis preparation) spent in their country of residence.
  • Contribution to participation costs of ca. 2.820 € per semester, maximum 11.280 € in total.
  • Insurance package, i.e., health insurance.
  • The scholarship is a full scholarship, meant to cover ALL costs (e.g., tuition fees, travelling, visa costs, accommodation, living expenses, etc.). There will be no further funding.


  • The selection committee will ensure that selected students meet the definition established above. Non-compliance may lead to the cancellation of the scholarship awarded to a student.

  • Without prejudice to the respect of high academic standards, in order to ensure a geographical balance across students, the consortium shall respect the following basic criteria:

    No more than 3 of the selected students should come from the same country.
