Call for Expressions of Interest for Nairobi Based Investigative Journalists.

This call is based on a collaboration between the Africa End Sexual Harassment Initiative (AESHI) and The Heinrich Böll Foundation.

They are seeking the services of an investigative journalist to undertake a three-month assignment commencing on the 28th of August, 2020 and concluding on the 30th of November.

This entails working with selected institutions and sources to gain better understanding of the gender dynamics operating in a particular working environment and its impact on work performance and gender equality.

Their network is committed to the promotion of women’s equality in the workplace and uses various national and regional platforms to advocate against laws, policies and practices inconsistent with international norms and standards on women’s rights and fundamental freedoms.

The ideal candidate for this position is someone with several years’ experience producing high quality investigative work and who can conduct interviews with both on the record sources and anonymous sources.

Experience with documentary film making and multi-platform storytelling especially on gender sensitive issues requiring a high level of confidentiality and respect for the story tellers is an advantage.

During this process, the investigative journalist must be able to have access to and use a range of video, audio and digital equipment and information technology to interview, research, write, assemble, edit and deliver outputs in the appropriate medium, to the highest professional standards.

The ideal candidate must have the ability to exercise editorial judgment in developing story ideas and producing accurate and impartial journalism.

This is a position for an enterprising journalist with a track record of unearthing stories that expose abuse and hold the powerful to account.

You should be able to demonstrate the ability to cultivate sources and write in-depth, precise reports and must available for the stipulated period. Significant recent experience in documentary and investigative documentary production is required and an ability to work under pressure and report regularly to the network.

The output should be a compelling, evidence-based, investigative news production capable of being converting data and interviews into an investigative research based publication.

Quantitative evidence is the desired bedrock of these investigations so it is also crucial that applications outline how to identify and obtain useful data, and that you can think creatively about how it can be used to buttress or solidify your reporting.
