The MAIA (Joint Master Degree in MedicAl Imaging and Applications) master is a 2 years’ joint master degree (120 ECTS) coordinated by the University of Girona (UdG, Spain) and with the University of Bourgogne (uB, France) and the Università degli studi di Cassino e del Lazio Meridionale (UNICLAM, Italy) as partners.

The master is structured in four semesters: in the first semester students study in uB the introductory subjects on image processing and medical imaging, in the second semester they all move to UNICLAM for acquiring knowledge on more advanced subjects in computer vision and pattern recognition.

  • In the third semester students visit UdG for a more applied modules on computer aided diagnosis and medical applications.
  • Finally, during the fourth semester, students develop their master thesis in any of the universities of the consortia or collaborating institutions (research centers, universities or companies) working in the field of medical imaging and its applications.
  • The key characteristic of the mobility scheme of the JMD is that students move in cohort from one university to the other, semester after semester.
  • This group mobility, in contrast with option-based mobility, permits to create esprit de corps and a true class which facilitates the belonging and integration to the master and leads to an authentic MAIA identity.
  • Moreover, having an integrated student group further enhances the intercultural awareness and increases self-empowerment and self-esteem of its members.
  • In addition, the mobility scheme has been organized in line with the educational progress scheme to achieve an improved learning: the university in which each semester is held has been chosen taking the expertise and the research/educational facilities and the equipments into account.
  • For instance, UB has state of the art facilities in medical imaging and acquisition systems, UNICLAM will develop on machine learning and optimisation strategies and finally UdG will focus more on CAD development and specific applications.
  • Being exposed to three different European countries and providing the Local Culture modules with language facilities in each of the universities (see course structure), MAIA students will develop improved foreign language competences in French, Spanish/Catalan and Italian and a better awareness of the European project, culture and EU values.
  • Moreover, the additional optional mobility in the fourth semester to perform the MSc thesis in collaborating European research groups or companies enhances even more aspects such intercultural awareness, employability and career prospects, and provides an increased motivation for further education and training in terms of conventional or industrial PhDs.
  • In summary, the acquired knowledge and transversal competences through this individual and characteristic mobility scheme will be very important assets for the students for their future employability and career prospects, as those are aspects that companies and research institutions value in recent graduates.
