France and Kenya Research Grants

France and Kenya Research Grants; France and Kenya wish to strengthen their cooperation activities for higher education and research.

On May 5, 2015, the two countries signed the Hubert Curien "PAMOJA" partnership, renewed on October 6, 2021 to cover the period 2021-2026.

It is implemented in Kenya by the Ministry of Education through the National Research Fund (NRF) , and in France by the Ministries of Europe and Foreign Affairs (MEAE) and Higher Education, Research and Innovation (MESRI).

Calls for applications for this program are launched every two years.

  • France and Kenya Research Grants - Types of Projects

    The general objectives of the PHC are:

  • Support and promote scientific and technological cooperation between French and Kenyan researchers within public institutions;
  • Particularly encourage the establishment of new links and partnerships as well as the development of innovative ideas of excellence and capacity building among young researchers;
  • Promote exchanges between researchers by promoting mobility between the two countries;
  • Develop synergies between the two scientific communities to create a sustainable network; and
  • Strengthen the links between research and the industrial sector (public and private) Research and innovation projects carried out in the fields below are eligible:
  • Material sciences and nanotechnologies;
  • Engineering sciences and new production technologies;
  • Biotechnology and biological sciences (including health, agriculture and biomathematics);
  • Space science and technology;
  • Training in energy technologies, engineering sciences and mathematics;
  • Telecommunications, electronics and computer technologies;
  • Indigenous knowledge techniques and natural products;
  • Environmental Sciences;
  • Social sciences, letters and human sciences;
  • Engineering sciences and the built environment.

    France and Kenya Research Grants - Team Eligibility Conditions

    France : The call is open to research laboratories attached to higher education establishments, research organizations or companies.

    Kenya : The call is open to scholars working and living in Kenya, attached to an institution licensed by the state to carry out higher education and research activities, including Technical and Vocational Training Institutions (TVETs).

    Only applications explicitly approved by the organizations responsible for the partner teams will be accepted.

    Each project is led by two scientific managers, one in France, the other in Kenya. They will be in charge of the scientific, technical and administrative coordination of the project as well as the drafting of scientific and financial reports.

    Projects that have already received support under this program are not eligible for re-application immediately after their completion. New collaborations will be given priority in all cases.

    Only application files co-submitted by the partner researchers to the bodies responsible for the program in their respective countries are declared admissible. French researchers must check with their partner.

    France and Kenya Research Grants - Project Evaluation Criteria

    \ Projects will be selected on the basis of the following criteria :

  • Scientific and technical quality;
  • Feasibility;
  • Methodology ;
  • Interest in the international context.
  • Alignment with national priorities. When relevant, the study of the social impact of the project will be encouraged
  • Active participation in the project of young researchers and/or doctoral students;
  • Prospects for structuring and promoting the project .

    Emphasis must be placed on training in research and through research for doctoral students and young researchers. As such, the integration of young researchers and students as well as the exchange of post-docs are encouraged.

    Project Selection Committee

    Eligible projects will be scientifically evaluated by two committees, one French, the other Kenyan, made up of recognized experts in the various fields of research. For the Kenyan part, the National Research Fund (NRF) will ensure the scientific evaluation of the dossiers.

    For the French part, the Delegation for European and International Affairs (DAEI) of the MESRI will ensure the scientific evaluation of the files.

    The final funding decision is taken jointly by the French and Kenyan authorities on the basis of these scientific assessments.

    Operating methods

    The duration of the projects is two years.

  • Funding is granted on an annual basis, for two consecutive years.
  • The allocated budget must imperatively be consumed between January 1 and December 31 of the year in question and cannot be carried over to the following financial year.
  • It relates solely to payment for the mobility between the two countries of researchers involved in the programme. Any other financing necessary for the implementation of joint projects must be provided by the partner laboratories' own means or by other sources.

    The renewal of credits for a second year is subject to:

  • Optimal use of the funding granted for the 1st year.
  • The submission of a progress report mentioning the scientific results obtained (1 page in free format) and the mobility carried out or planned before the end of the current (or calendar) year.
  • The drafting of a financial report of the actions carried out or programmed before the end of the calendar year. The progress report and the financial statement must be sent before November 22 of the 1st year to the French Embassy (see contact for the program below).

    The second year of funding is conditional on :

  • Optimal use of the funding granted for the first year;
  • The submission of a progress report mentioning the scientific results obtained (1 page written in French and in free format) and the mobility carried out or planned before the end of the current year;
  • The drafting (in French) of a financial statement of the actions carried out or planned before the end of the calendar year.

    The progress report and the financial statement must be sent before November 15 of the first year to the French Embassy at (see contact for the program below).

    In Kenya, funds are granted for two consecutive budget years. They must be spent between July 1 and June 30 of the budget year concerned and cannot be carried over to the following year.

    The second year of funding is subject to the submission of a short scientific and financial progress report, written jointly and in English by the two coordinators, French and Kenyan, of the project. For the Kenyan side, this report must be sent before May 15, at the end of the 1st year, to the NRF.

    France and Kenya Research Grants - Eligible Expenses

  • The means granted by France exclusively cover the payment of subsistence allowances for researchers from the Kenyan team and travel for researchers from the French team.
  • The maximum amount of funding is 23,000 euros per project, 5,000 euros per year to finance the mobility of French researchers, 6,500 euros per year to finance the mobility of Kenyan researchers.
  • The funds are intended solely to support the mobility of researchers (including doctoral and post-doctoral students) between the two countries, namely: international transport and per diem (including insurance).
  • Any other financing necessary for the implementation of the joint projects must be provided by the own means of the partner laboratories (French and Kenyan) or by other sources. The search for private funding is encouraged. Funding from the French government will exclusively cover the mission expenses of the French team :
  • Transport costs for 2 French researchers (1 junior researcher/year and 1 senior researcher/year) traveling to Kenya: coverage up to a limit of €1,000 for a France/Kenya return trip.
  • Per diem for a junior researcher up to 50 euros per day for a stay of 30 consecutive days maximum per year and for a senior researcher up to 125 euros per day for a stay of 15 consecutive days maximum per year.

    Funding from the Kenyan government will cover:

  • Mission expenses of 2 Kenyan researchers in France:
  • Transport costs for 2 Kenyan researchers (1 junior researcher/year and 1 senior researcher/year) traveling to France: coverage within the limit of 120,000 Ksh per ticket.
  • Per diem for two Kenyan researchers traveling to France for a maximum stay of 30 days.
