Location: Mombasa

Program / Department Summary: Mercy Corps implements high-quality, analytical development work and peacebuilding programs in difficult places. We have been operating in Kenya since 2008 and are presently implementing development programs across the Central, Rift Valley, North Western and Northern Eastern regions of Kenya.

The Operations Department is committed to implementing and maintaining the highest standards of efficiency and integrity in logistics and purchasing of goods and services for country office and field offices.

The overriding objective for all Mercy Corps procurement and logistics activities are the prompt and effective provision of procurement and logistical solutions as well as materials and services to Mercy Corps’ beneficiaries in compliance with Mercy Corps’ and donor policies, procedures, regulations and specifications.

General Position Summary: The Driver will work within the Logistics department of the Operational Support structure for the Mercy Corps Kenya Mombasa office and will be committed to provide reliable and compliant support to program activities in order to achieve efficient service to program beneficiaries.

S/he will provide safe, transport services for the respective Mercy Corps program and support staff in the described Area of Responsibility (AOR).

The driver will adhere to all traffic and MC safety rules and follow the transport guidelines required by the Operations department.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Operate MC vehicles as assigned by supervisor;
  • Maintain vehicle log-sheets in accordance with MC policies/regulations;
  • Check the vehicle conditions after each trip/routinely – report needs and problems to logistics department;
  • Adhere to all safety and communication protocols as advised by Mercy Corps and supervisor;
  • Responsible for the safekeeping of all vehicle equipment, tools, first aid kits, spares etc.;
  • Keep the vehicle ready, clean and on standby – ready for use at all times;
  • Assist, as required, with logistics, program and administration functions in the respective office;
  • Cooperate and be of assistance to staff and visitors – assist in troubleshooting potential problems during daily business whenever necessary;
  • Undertake field assignments as assigned;
  • Report all maintenance needs of the vehicle to transport management on a regular basis;
  • Adhere to all MC policies and procedures as outlined in MC policies and procedure manuals;
  • Conduct himself/herself both professionally and personally in such a manner as to bring credit to Mercy Corps and to not jeopardize its humanitarian mission in country of operation;
  • Other duties as assigned.

    Organizational Learning: As part of Mercy Corps’ agency-wide Organizational Learning Initiative, all team members are responsible for spending 5% of their work time in formal and/or non-formal professional learning that benefit Mercy Corps as well as themselves.

    Accountability: Mercy Corps team members are expected to support all efforts towards accountability, specifically to our beneficiaries and to international standards guiding international relief and development work while actively engaging beneficiary communities as equal partners in the design, monitoring and evaluation of our field projects.

    Supervisory Responsibility: None

    Reports Directly To: Senior Procurement and Logistics Officer

    Works Directly With: All program staff, Operations and Finance departments, Teams.

    Knowledge and Experience:
  • Valid driver’s license;
  • At least 3 years’ experience driving in Mombasa and its neighboring environs;
  • First Aid Course and with proven experience in First Aid management;
  • Must respect and adhere to all safety and traffic rules;
  • Understanding of written and spoken English and Kiswahili is required;
  • Certificate of Good Conduct;
  • Basic Motor Vehicle Mechanic course required.

    Success Factors:
  • Effective time management skills including priority setting and responding to short notice travel requests.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Able to work on weekends;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, reliable, flexible and a committed person.
