Komaza Director of Expansion Job Vacancies in Kenya


What you will do

  • Develop Komaza’s short- and long-term expansion strategy, working closely with Komaza’s Founder/CEO and Field Operations Director to define the key factors and processes for selecting and launching a new site.
  • For 2017/18 expansion into Kwale, you will be primarily based in Kwale County in order to establish that site office
  • Design, recruit and manage an effective, efficient, and innovative Expansion Department that can deliver on these ambitious growth targets,
  • Lead the design and optimization of our program model, strategies and operational tools to align our core business model with the specific context of new communities and environments.
  • Coordinate with other company Directors to plan how their departments (Field Ops, Finance, HR, Admin, IT, etc.) can support first-year expansion operations and subsequently expand their geographic scope to successfully take over long-term management of newly established sites.
  • Develop and deliver strategies to ensure that Komaza’s core values are effectively embraced at new sites, and that everyone feels part of “one Komaza”,
  • Work with other members of Komaza’s senior management team to further define and model our innovative, results-oriented, values-driven company culture, and

    What you should have

  • Bachelor’s + relevant graduate degree from top global universities (or equivalent work experience).
  • 5+ years of work experience at reputable companies in a relevant field of work (e.g. operations management in East Africa or similar), with 2+ years in a senior management role.
  • Excellent critical/analytical/systems-thinking skills to design and optimize complex operations.
  • Excellent verbal & written communication skills to translate chaos and complexity into clarity.
  • Strong innovation skills to troubleshoot bottlenecks and design continuous improvements.
  • Experience with core business support functions, including basic HR, Finance, Procurement, IT, etc.
  • Experience designing & building robust management systems to effectively hand specific workstreams to mid-level managers.
  • Ability to retain big-picture strategic awareness while diving deep into details, and providing coaching to help others focus on key factors, rather than getting lost in the weeds.

    Komaza Director of Wood Processing R&D Job Vacancies in Kenya

    What you will do

  • Identify key knowledge gaps, risks, and questions for each product line; then design and implement scrappy, fast methods for answering those unknowns.
  • Develop and manage relationships with external advisors, competitors and stakeholders to gain strategic, operational and technological insights.
  • Develop and manage a simple knowledge management platform to capture and organize insights, new questions, and next steps for each active product line.
  • Develop “minimum viable products” of several different products and production lines to test product viability, processing options, and market demand.
  • Develop high-level financial models to forecast unit economics and profit margins.
  • Design & implement quick market tests to assess consumer preferences & market size.
  • Research diverse wood processing methods & technologies to produce target products, including site visits to existing operations in Africa and beyond to gain deep insights.
  • Conduct comprehensive feasibility assessments and develop detailed business & implementation plans to scale up the most promising wood processing opportunities.
  • Hire, train and manage a growing team of Wood Processing R&D staff to do all of this.

    What you have

  • Bachelor’s in mechanical engineering, product design, manufacturing, wood technology, or similar. MBA or Design/Engineering Master's (or equivalent work) is strongly preferred.
  • 6-10 years of work experience in a relevant field (e.g. mechanical engineering, product design), with 2-4 years experience leading a small team.
  • Entrepreneurial (or
    similar) experience of navigating rapid learning through an ambiguous opportunity/risk landscape to identify and develop promising business opportunities.
  • Exposure to manufacturing and markets in the developing world, with MacGyver-like ingenuity to develop scrappy solutions to build minimum viable products, and an intuitive HCD perspective to understand local consumer preferences.
  • Ability to retain big-picture strategic awareness while diving deep into details, in order to focus on key factors, rather than getting lost in the weeds.
  • Sufficient quant skills to assess high-level economic attractiveness of different options.
  • Experience working with wood is a big plus. But as we need to test diverse opportunities, we’re not looking for a deep “expert” in a single field; nor are we looking for a “jack of all trades, master of none.” We’re seeking a “master” of the lean product/business development methodology, who ideally is a weekend woodworker hobbyist.

    What you will do

  • Manage successful execution of every phase of a project/operation. Monitor & evaluate progress of each activity against specific measureable targets.
  • Plan your team’s work. Distill monthly/quarterly calendars into weekly work plans, clearly delegating measurable daily work for yourself, direct reports, and the team.
  • Manage your team’s work productivity and quality. Monitor performance with frequent follow-up, using measurable criteria.
  • Train, coach and mentor your direct reports to develop their skills, knowledge and intuition to succeed in their roles and longer-term careers.
  • Build a positive, motivated team culture, supporting key values of honesty, hard work, and quality.
  • Oversee data collection via paper forms & phones. Ensure data integrity. Organize multiple data streams into a single database.
  • Lead team problem solving to quickly resolve all cases. Ensure all problem cases are reported from field staff in a timely manner.

    What you should have

  • Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field.
    6+ years of total work experience, including 4+ years of relevant experience managing operations of large teams at a fast-paced organization.
  • Preference for experience doing field work and managing remote field teams.
  • Experience working in an organization that frequently communicates progress, successes, and challenges to staff & supervisors; eager to develop an open communication culture in your team.
  • Natural ability to talk to people in a way that encourages them to share feedback and challenges, and to give people constructive feedback while promoting high morale to set them up for success.
  • Experience identifying performance issues with staff and quickly providing direct, helpful feedback to improve their performance and the outcomes of the overall operation.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills, writing skills, and computer skills (MS Office suite).
  • Excellent attention-to-detail. Natural ability to find and solve small problems before they get big.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills, both for yourself and to manage others.
  • Excellent multitasking skills, while being able to make quick decisions to maintain momentum.
