United Nations Director, Science Division, D2 Careers in Kenya

Responsibilities

  • Ensure that programmed activities are carried out in a timely fashion and co-ordinate work in the different areas both within the Division and other UN Environment divisions and offices, and with other organizations of the United Nations System, donors and agencies as appropriate;
  • Co-ordinate and oversee the preparation of reports for presentation to donors, United Nations intergovernmental bodies as appropriate;
  • Manage, guide, develop, encourage and train staff under his/her supervision; foster teamwork and communication among staff in the Division and across the organizational boundaries;
  • Chair meetings, seminars, etc., on substantive-related issues;
  • Represent the Organization at international, regional, inter-agency meetings, seminars and conferences;
  • Provide programmatic/substantive expertise and, when appropriate, hold programmatic / substantive and organizational discussions with representatives of other institutions.

    Education

  • Advanced University Degree (Masters Degree or equivalent degree) in natural sciences, social sciences, environmental management, business administration, management, finance, law, economics or other related area is required.
  • A first-level degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent) in the specified fields with two additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

    Work Experience

  • More than fifteen years of progressively responsible experience in the field of science, environment, geography and development, human resources management, business or financial in multicultural institutions as well as programme and project planning and analyses, budgeting, or related area is required.
  • Experience in a management and leadership position in an international organization is required.
  • Experience in the area of the science/policy interface is desirable.

    Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
  • For this position fluency in English is required.
  • Knowledge of French is desirable.

    Responsibilities

  • Contributing to the overall management of the Office's activities and operations.
  • Providing leadership to the development of innovative and/or change management programmes.
  • Coordinating and overseeing the preparation of reports for presentation to intergovernmental bodies such as the Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budget Questions, Committee for Programme Coordination, Economic and Social Council, the General Assembly and other policy making organs, as appropriate.
  • Chairs meetings, seminars, etc., on substantive-related issues;
  • Represents the Organization at international, regional, inter-agency meetings, seminars and conference;
  • Provides programmatic/substantive expertise on an issue, or holds programmatic/substantive and organizational discussions with representatives of other institutions.
  • Advising on effective implementation modalities for UN Environment's programmes and projects.
  • Coordinating work in the different areas both within the Office, and with other organizations of the United Nations System, donors and agencies as appropriate.
  • Ensuring that the outputs produced by the Office maintain high-quality standards; that reports are clear, objective and based on comprehensive data.
  • Ensures that all outputs produced by the office/division under his/her supervision meet required standards before completion to ensure they comply with the relevant mandates.
  • Exercising Quality Control at the organizational level in respect to projects, legal instruments and donor agreements and their compliance with applicable financial rules and regulations, including acting as focal point for audit and the implementation of measures that strengthen performance and financial management.
  • Reporting to intergovernmental bodies on budget/programme preparation and performance or on programmatic/ substantive issues, as appropriate, particularly those presented in biannual and/or annual reports.
  • Overseeing all aspects of planning and strategic management of human resources for UN Environment taking due account of geographical and gender balance and other institutional values;
  • Managing, guiding, developing and training staff under
    his/her supervision; fostering teamwork and communication among staff in the Office and across organizational boundaries.
  • Performs other related duties as requested by the Executive Director of UN Environment.

    Education

  • Advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in social sciences, public business administration and management is required.
  • A first-level degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent) in the specified fields with two additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

    Work Experience

  • More than fifteen years of relevant and progressively responsible experience, with ten years within a senior management position in a national/ international organization with project financing, budgeting, human resources and management is required.
  • Successful budget preparation and management experience in an international organization and the demonstrated leadership of a team of staff working on corporate services, including budget preparation and management is required.

    Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
  • For this position fluency in English is required.
  • Knowledge of French is desirable.

    United Nations Finance and Budget Assistant Careers in Kenya

    Responsibilities

    Posting Period: 19 June 2017 - 18 July 2017

    • Provide support with respect to the review, analyses and preparation of the medium-term plan and its revisions.
    • Prepare supporting documents (narrative and supporting tables) with respect to finalization of cost estimates and budget proposals, in terms of staff and non-staff requirements.
    • Assist managers in the elaboration of resource requirements for budget submissions.
    • Undertake research and provides support to higher level Finance and Budget Officers with respect to budget reviews of relevant intergovernmental and expert bodies.
    • Monitor expenditures and compares with approved budget; prepares adjustments.
    • Review requisitions for goods and services to ensure: (a) correct objects of expenditure have been charged, and (b) availability of funds.
    • Assist in preparation of budget performance submissions and finalization of budget performance reports, analysing variances between approved budgets and actual expenditures.
    • Monitor integrity of various financial databases.
    • Verify accuracy of input data, ensuring consistency of data in previous allotments to new allotments issued.

    Education

    • High school diploma or equivalent is required. Finance or accounting qualification, advanced Excel User skills and Certification in Public Accounting or Association of Chartered Certified Accountants is desirable.
    • Must have passed the United Nations Administrative Support Assessment Test (ASAT) or the Global General Service Test (GGST) at Headquarters or an equivalent locally-administered test at Offices away from Headquarters.

    Work Experience

    • A minimum of seven years of progressive responsible experience in Finance, Budget and related area is required.
    • Working experience with the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems will be an added advantage.

    Languages

    • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
    • For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
