Small Grants for Refugee-Led Organizations in Kenya;In line with the Government of Kenya’s Shirika Plan, UNHCR is committed to promoting refugee inclusion, community participation and localized approaches to education programming. Access to quality education remains a critical priority, particularly for refugee and host community children and youth who face barriers to enrolment, retention and successful completion of their studies.

Priority Areas

Identification and Re‑enrolment of Out‑of‑School Children

Community‑based identification, verification and tracking of out‑of‑school children and youth.

Household outreach, awareness raising, referrals and follow‑up to support enrolment and re‑enrolment.

Addressing barriers to school attendance through community engagement and case management.

Education Data Collection and Monitoring

Tracking enrolment, attendance, retention and completion trends of refugee children.

Strengthening community‑based education monitoring and reporting mechanisms.

Scholarship Student Support

Identification and documentation of emerging needs affecting scholarship beneficiaries (UNHCR, JKF, EGF).

Support for timely processing and follow‑up on school fees, stipends and other education‑related assistance.

Monitoring academic participation, retention and well‑being of scholarship recipients.

Referrals and mentorship support to enhance academic success and completion.

Community Engagement

Strengthening collaboration between learners, parents, schools and communities.

Promoting the value of education, especially for girls, children with disabilities and other vulnerable learners.

Supporting community‑led initiatives that improve educational participation and learning outcomes.

Grant Information

Maximum grant amount: USD $5,000.

Implementation period: Up to 3 months (renewable based on funding availability).

Project locations: Kakuma Municipality including Kakuma and Kalobeyei Refugee Settlement Areas.

Eligibility Requirements

Must be a registered Refugee‑Led Organization (RLO) or Refugee‑Led Social Enterprise operating in Kenya.

At least 50% of leadership positions held by refugees or asylum seekers.

Operational in Turkana West Sub‑County.

Demonstrated experience in education programming, community outreach, data collection, child protection, youth engagement or related interventions.

Established presence and strong community networks within the target population.

Proposed activities must not have received funding from UNHCR or another donor during the proposed implementation period.

Relevance to identified education needs and priorities.

Contribution to enrolment, retention and success of learners.

Quality, feasibility and innovation of the approach.

Community participation, ownership and accountability.

Inclusion of Age, Gender and Diversity (AGD) considerations.

Organizational capacity and ability to deliver results.

Value for money and cost‑effectiveness.

Sustainability and potential for long‑term impact.

Risk management, safeguarding and accountability measures.
