Second Class & Pass Degree Scholarship

Second Class & Pass Degree Scholarships: Applicants with a second class honours degree & pass degree accepted for scholarship consideration. 2:2 or pass bachelors degree scholarships available.

***********

Q. I am one of the people who graduated with a mere pass degree at my undergraduate university level.

By this, I mean a degree less than lower second class. However, you will be surprised to learn that I am actually a distinction material at any tertiary level of education and under normal circumstances whichever class I belong to I am respected for my intellectual capabilities in that class.

From the foregoing you can deduce that something was abnormal in my circumstances that made me graduate with a pass degree and not a better degree.

The answer is yes.

During most of my years at the university (of Malawi) I was suffering from recurrent Osteomylitis i.e a bone disease that makes the bone to gradually and partially decompose. It causes immense pain.

I eventually got healed after I had graduated and picked up a job because then I could afford to pay for better medical attention.

In university, I often used to be out of school for over 5 weeks towards the end of the semesters because of the illness. It seemed to be triggered by even the healthiest amount of stress that is related to the approach of examination time.

So often I would force myself to go back to the university and sit for the examinations that I had not prepared for but I almost invariably used to score over 50%.

Many of my friends tell me that it was a mark of a genius that I managed to successfully complete my degree programme considering the turmoil I was in.

Evidence of my high intellectual capabilities were usually shown during those times when the disease used to lessen its grip on me when I used to pass with distinctions like in the whole of my first year when my average grade was a distinction and in third year my average grade of the first semester when I had started to major in Computer Science and to minor in Demography was also a distinction.

Before university, in secondary school I was top of the class all the four years of my secondary education.

I was also a key member of the four man team from Secondary School that won the National Secondary School Quiz Competition in Malawi.

The quiz comprised questions on Mathematics, English, Science, Mixed Bag (General Knowledge),Geography and History.

By this time, reader, you may be wondering what I am driving at in
this passage.

Well, the issue is that most of the Masters scholarships have a condition that makes most of us intelligent people who got poor quality degrees because of factors other than intellectual capacity ineligible. Why? Because they specify that applicants should have upper second class degree or better ?

I would suggest that there should be an increase in the number of scholarships that accommodate poor quality degree holders during applications but subject them to extra assessment methods. Good quality degree holders should be exempted from such extra assessments.

Thereafter, poor quality degree holders who have done very well in extra assessments should be considered equally together with good quality degree holders.

The summary of the reason why I am making such a suggestion is that in our part of the world here there are a lot of poverty and poor standard of living factors that cause a significant number of highly intelligent university and other tertiary level students to come off with degrees lower that lower second class but whose woes continue because they can not access masters degree education since both government and other sponsors choose to select people with good quality degrees.

Scholarships for Pilot training schools or scholarships for masters with a pass degree
by: Kelvin

I’m a recent graduate of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and I’m currently doing my service.

I graduated with a 3rd class degree in Geography and Rural development and I’m very much interested in entering a pilot training program anywhere in the world.

This always sounds like an unrealistic dream to the average Ghanaian as it’s generally known that these courses are very expensive.

According to my research, everything may round up to $50,000 or even more.

Honestly, it would be a miracle if I’m ever a trained pilot in 5 years. I still haven’t given up on this dream even though I’ve had a lot of discouragement from almost everyone.

Sometimes I doubt myself too because even if I’m able to make the training, would I be eligible to apply health wise? I say this as my blood type is the ss type which means I carry the sickle cell genotype.

School was stressful but I persevered even when I went through my crises phase.

As a result, my grades dropped in second year from 2nd class and I struggled to sustain it. I was on the verge of being withdrawn from school but I was able to meet certain requirements at the last hour, for that I’m grateful to God.

From there I struggled as I managed to get my grades up till final year where I almost crossed the barrier to the 2nd class but couldn’t, at least I was excited I graduated. In life I know a plan B is always necessary and mine here is offering a master’s degree hopefully in courses related to transport geography or rural development.

For me, offering my masters with a pass certificate looks very uncertain too as all the scholarships available are for those with a 1st class degrees and 2nd upper.

Kindly help with where I can apply for any type of scholarship available for pilot training or masters.

The best students are not only those with 1st class and 2nd upper.
    by: Anonymous

I studied at University of Ghana, Legon,I'm saying this because there are a lot of loopholes in our educational system here.

Our system is not like that of the westerners or the Americans. I think is about time people rethink and crosscheck and conduct an extra exams to those so called 1st class students who are blocking and hindering a lot of chances for we the third class holders, because I personally know some students who pay to get their grades, others sleep with lecturers to get their grades and those are the very ones who gets the 1st class.

I had a lot of difficulty financing my education.

I spent most of my time outside the lecture theater just to survive, so I believe if the system is fair and things in order we the third and pass student could even make more than those 1st class students.

We also want to further our education so the master programme should be open to all of us and they should be an entrance exams, with this the so called 1st class student will be thrown out because they can't bribe their way here.

    by: Rabiu

i luv dis article not only bcos i hold a 2nd class lower degree, but also bcos it makes a lot of sense and i knw my self worth and intellectual capabilities. it is understandable when uk based organizations and schools peg their eligibility criteria at 1st or 2nd class upper divisions. but when Africans do that, we simple ooze with hypocrisy. our is a continent and mine is a country where wrong is mostly right and right, wrong. the facts speak for themselves. less than 10% of especially, 2nd class upper holders can defend their degrees.
but what can we do? suffer and smile. maybe someday, we'll get our chance.

    second class scholarship award
    by: Anonymous

I believe that second class lower division and third class honor should also be considered for scholarship award because it is not all those who came out with first class and second class iupper division honor that are intellectually sound. Various factors could be led to poor academics performers. Environmental factor, health factor, family factor, governmental factor and the rest. I believe there is need for oral test and written test to know those that are academically sound for the awards. Thx

    "Pass" an incredible stumbling block
    by: del

I graduated from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology with an ordinary Pass in BSc. Mechanical Engineering in 2009. This has proved to be a stumbling block in search of a Job.

I loved computing and desired ardently to be a computer engineer. however, when the school offered me Mechanical Engineering instead, I reluctantly took it up. No sooner than later did i find the course too challenging.

I was one of the best in Senior High School. Infact, after my BSc. I took up a Post graduate Diploma I.T earning a First Class category.

But what next? Masters programs ask for a First degree with 1st or 2nd class. Jobs don't want to see my "pass" cert.

    these are difficult times.

    Contributions to consider
    by: Atz

I too received a pass degree and I am currently finding it difficult to get into a masters programme and furthermore get a scholarship. The hurtful thing is that I have years of voluntary experience and I have given back to my community, country and region and I think that Governments, International Agencies and Universities should consider alternative criteria to grades when offering scholarships. The skills and experience I currently possess from voluntary work would be beneficial to any organization that I work with.

I was heart broken the day that I learnt I got a pass in my Bsc degree. I managed to get a job as clinical trial assistant at a research company in thw Uk after eight months of graduating. I worked only two months and got fired because I was working full time with a student visa. I decided to do a masters degree and I succeeded in obtaining a masters degree with a pass classification. I actually got a 56.5 percent overall average. I failed to get a merit but am happy is a masters degree. The problem I have is that I don't have money to pay my school fees so that I can collect my masters degree certificate because I owe the university the sum of 11,370 pounds. What can I do am now in Africa?

    It's unfair
    by: Anonymous

I totally agree with this. I myself studied at a UK university as an international student. I ran out of money during my second year and had to take a break and return. It was hell trying to raise funds through extra work to finish and the constant collection letters from the school eventually caised me to go through a period of depression. I got a 2:2 at the end, but everywhere was looking for 2:1 or better. Now I can't get a scholarship to do my Masters because of the same reason. It's so unfair!

A pass degree is just has good if you have a good reason for it
    by: Anonymous

I like your article. I also got a pass degree and God has been so good to me i got a a job which is paying more than others who got a better classification than me. I have also just completed my MSc and got a Merit which makes me feel a lot better, My own reason was that i was never aware of the marking system at the university and I had immigration and Marital problems which affected my education immensely. I know i should have found out the grading system work, there was not much i could do to push me up to a 2nd class so i tried my best to improve which i did on my last modules, but the marks were not good enough to push my degree to a 2nd class. So sometimes i have seen jobs on internet site which i can do and have knowledge of but because they asking of 1st class or 2:1, i cannot apply for it which ireally hurts me bad
