Joint WHO African Region/TDR Impact Grants for Implementation Research; The African region continues to face persistent health system weaknesses and bears the highest burden of communicable and noncommunicable diseases.

  • Global efforts are accelerating development of new interventions (drugs, vaccines, diagnostics).

  • Improving coverage of existing interventions is equally critical.

  • Implementation research provides evidence to adapt interventions to local contexts but remains under‑utilized.

  • This call supports country‑led implementation research to strengthen health systems, improve access, and address emerging challenges such as climate change and pandemics.

  • Grants encourage cooperation between research teams and national/international partners.


    Objectives
  • Strengthen research capacity of individuals and institutions.

  • Generate actionable knowledge and context‑specific solutions.

  • Encourage intersectoral dialogue and a One Health approach.


    Research Priorities

    1) Person‑centred service delivery across the life course

  • Transition from fragmented programmes to integrated PHC models.

  • Focus on communicable diseases (TB, malaria, NTDs).

  • Referral systems, continuity of care, quality improvement.

  • Scalable innovations for PHC delivery.


    2) Health systems strengthening, innovation and digital transformation

  • Address systemic bottlenecks limiting scale‑up and sustainability.

  • Access to medicines, diagnostics, labs, and supply chains.

  • Quality of care improvement strategies.

  • Digital health, HIS, AI‑supported tools.

  • Innovative service delivery and emergency preparedness.

  • Community system strengthening and cross‑sector collaboration.


    3) Environmental health, climate change, One Health and emerging threats

  • Climate‑sensitive diseases and adaptation strategies.

  • WASH integration into PHC.

  • AMR containment and rational medicine use.

  • One Health approaches for zoonoses and emerging diseases.

  • Strengthening surveillance, preparedness, and response systems.


    Eligibility Criteria
  • Proposals submitted in English, French, or Portuguese via eTDR portal.

  • Applications encouraged from early‑career researchers, women, and least‑developed countries.

  • Research must be conducted in the African Region.

  • PI and majority of team must be based in African institutions (health programmes, ministries, universities, research institutes, NGOs).

  • Project must align with objectives and scope of the call.

  • Authorization letter required if implementation is
    in a health centre.

  • Acknowledgement letter signed by relevant programme manager required.

  • Applicants must demonstrate experience in operational/implementation research (e.g., TDR Toolkit, MOOC, or formal training).
