Hivos East Africa Grants Writer in Kenya

Responsibilities

  • Perform prospect research with Programme Development Officers on foundations and corporations to evaluate prospects for corporate and foundation grants.
  • Work with Programme Managers to gather information necessary to report to corporate/foundation funders on current grant programmes.
  • Support grant reporting as required by foundation/corporate donors.
  • Provide stewardship to current donors, including work with Communications Officer & Monitoring Officer to provide regular written updates to donors.
  • Understanding of organizational structure, functions and needs.
  • Understanding of institutional history and programmes.
  • Track statistics relevant to development and provide department with written materials necessary for donor stewardship.
  • Assist with other fundraising projects as requested.

    Knowledge and skills

  • Knowledge of the grant application process for major multilateral and bilateral donors (mandatory) including EU, Global Fund and bilateral donors.
  • Strong written communication skills; ability to write clear, structured, articulate, and persuasive proposals (mandatory).
  • Strong editing skills & attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of fundraising techniques and strategies (mandatory).
  • Knowledge and familiarity with research techniques for fundraising prospect research (mandatory).
  • Knowledge of fundraising information sources (e.g. grants database).
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to incorporate accurate and pertinent information in the proposal or application.
  • Strong contributor in team environments. Must be able to work and communicate with individuals at all levels of the organization.

    Qualifications

  • Minimum of three years experience with grant writing (mandatory).
  • Previous experience with non-profit fundraising.
  • Experience working in deadline-driven environments.
  • Able to work well in a team environment, handle multiple assignments and meet deadlines.
  • Able to monitor and meet income goals.

    Hivos East Africa Programme Officer: Carbon Credits & Quality Control Careers in Kenya

    Role purpose

  • The PO in charge of Functionality & Carbon Credits Processes shall leads in coordinating and supporting National Biogas Programmes (NBPs)
  • The task covers the 5 ABPP countries (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia and Burkina Faso) and therefore includes regular travel to these countries.
  • The PO is answerable to the ABPP Fund Manager and report to the ABPP Design Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (DMEL) Manager.

    Result areas

  • Organise monitoring surveys including user, usage surveys and Kitchen Performance Tests;
  • Coordinate and organize monitoring site visits by consultants (DOEs).
  • Coordinate the biogas plant quality control processes
  • Monitoring Plant Repairs, Maintenance and Training (RMT);
  • Monitor countries unflagging of plants with technical issues.
  • Oversee internal communication on carbon finance items;
  • Ensure effective communication between ABPP central team and the national biogas programmes;
  • Prepare communications for stakeholder forum;
  • Provide input to communicate about carbon finance items on the carbon website.
  • Mentor and build capacity of national biogas programmes on carbon finance processes
  • Monitor overall Functionality rate and provide countries with areas of improvement

    Knowledge, competency and experience

  • Bachelors Degree in Environmental Sciences or Energy Financing or other relevant academic background (essential);
  • Experience in Monitoring and Evaluation is an added advantage;
  • At least 5 years of relevant work experience (essential), background in a similar role (desirable);
  • Well organised and able to keep deadlines. The job requires excellent time management skills and ability to juggle competing priorities;
  • Good group leadership qualities and able to work in a multi-stakeholder environment;
  • Strong analytical, conceptual skills and knowledge;
  • Excellent communication (verbal and writing skills in English) and interpersonal skills;
  • Capacity to produce high-quality briefs and reports;
  • Good level of proficiency in Windows Excel and
    quantitative analysis;
  • Experience in data management;
  • Ability to design data collection tools, surveys, surveillance systems, and evaluations;
  • Demonstrated ability to train and build capacity of others;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and managerial capacity;
  • Experience in a non-governmental organization or donor setting (desirable).

    Hivos East Africa Programme Officer: Green Foods & Productive Landscapes Careers in Kenya

    Responsibilities

  • Designing and implementing a strategy to identify, track, and secure suitable and sufficient funding and resources to support Hivos’ evolving work in green foods and productive landscapes. This includes:
  • Identifying and proactively pursuing grants and fundraising opportunities;
  • Preparing grant applications, concept notes and proposals to donors;
  • Coordinating fundraising activities and events;
  • Seeking in-kind, financial, and/or pro-bono support from relevant partners, companies, governments, and service providers;
  • Building a solid donor intelligence network/base representing the local, regional, and international donor communities, with a view to expanding Hivos’ green foods and productive landscapes portfolio;
  • Establishing and participating in formal and informal networks with relevant partners, donors, and actors;
  • Building strategic and lasting partnerships with investors, donors, governments, development partners and the private sector.
  • Actively participating and contributing to financial forecasting at the project and organizational level to determine necessary funding and resource requirements.
  • Securing suitable and sufficient funding and resources to support Hivos’ operational requirements.
  • Actively representing the organization’s programme development interests at relevant meetings, events, and within resource mobilization or donor-specific peer networks, as they relate to Hivos’ work.
  • Contribute to programme monitoring and evaluation to ensure concepts and proposals adhere to donor requirements and Hivos’ policies and procedures.
  • Provide other programmatic, research, administrative, and logistical support as needed.

    Your profile

  • Masters degree in Agriculture economics, development or related discipline (mandatory)
  • Minimum 3 years of post-graduate work experience in nonprofit program development and/or fundraising within the private sector and/or international development organizations. With specific knowledge of the economic, social, environmental, and development context in Sub Saharan Africa.
  • Demonstrated donor network in Kenya (required) and in the region (preferred).
  • Good networking, marketing, proposal development, and IT skills.
  • Ability to work on short-term assignments with tight deadlines while managing multiple tasks and pipelines.
  • Ability to work independently, and function effectively as a member of a global team, and adhere to strict deadlines.
  • Excellent research, analytical and communication skills.
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • High levels of personal integrity and accountability.

    Working conditions

    The Programme Officer will be based in the Kenya office, but with frequent and regular travel to the Uganda and Tanzania offices. The Programme Officer is expected to travel frequently as needed.
