Fully Funded Fulbright South African Research Scholar Program for Young South Africans


Fully Funded Fulbright South African Research Scholar Program for Young South Africans; Opportunity for South African university faculty or research institute professionals to conduct research in their field of expertise at a U.S. academic or research institution

  • Duration: 3 to 9 months

  • Purpose: Strengthen academic programs or curricula at the scholar’s home institution through high-level research

  • Research programs commence between August 1, 2027 and March 31, 2028 and must be completed by December 31, 2028

  • Applicants must demonstrate a proven track record of productive scholarly research, teaching, and publication

    Eligibility Requirements

  • Hold a doctorate or equivalent terminal degree in their field at the time of application — Mandatory

  • Preference for individuals with at least 3 years of university teaching experience and a productive scholarly record

  • Applications for doctoral dissertation research, immediate post-doctoral research, or general professional travel are ineligible

  • Be a South African citizen OR a permanent resident with a minimum of 5 years permanent residency in South Africa
        • Note: South African nationals with dual S.A./U.S. citizenship are not eligible

  • Open to scholars in all disciplines except clinical medical research involving patient contact

  • Preference for candidates who have not previously received a Fulbright scholar grant and have limited or no U.S. experience

  • Must have sufficient proficiency in English to carry out projects and collaborate effectively
        • TOEFL not required, but U.S. Embassy may administer an English test if necessary

  • Applicants must be in good health; successful candidates will submit a Medical History and Examination Report

  • Scholars unsuccessful in previous competitions may re-apply, but must revise proposals, update CVs, and obtain current references/invitations
