Fully Funded Africa Uncensored/KAS Africa Investigative Journalism Lab for Mid-career & Senior East African Journalists

Program Overview

Intensive one‑week residential training designed to sharpen investigative skills of practising journalists across East Africa and beyond.

Participants will work with experienced investigative reporters, editors, and digital forensics experts to strengthen real‑world stories.

Training includes data journalism, source protection, legal frameworks, and digital verification.

Training Objectives

Strengthen participants’ capacity to conceptualise, research, and execute high‑impact investigative stories.

Provide hands‑on training in data journalism, open‑source intelligence (OSINT), and digital verification tools.

Equip journalists with knowledge of legal protections, safety protocols, and ethical considerations.

Foster a regional network of investigative journalists committed to accountability journalism.

Support development of at least one publishable investigative story per participant.

Who Should Apply

Mid‑career and senior journalists with a minimum of three (3) years’ active reporting experience.

Journalists with prior work or interest in investigative and accountability reporting.

Staff reporters, freelancers, editors, and multimedia journalists from print, broadcast, and digital media outlets.

Journalists from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Somalia, and other African countries are encouraged to apply.

Mentorship and editorial support from leading investigative journalists.

Training materials, tools, and digital investigative techniques.

Full residential accommodation in Mombasa for the duration of the training.

Return travel support for participants based outside Mombasa.

Certificate of participation upon successful completion.

Selection Criteria

Demonstrated experience in journalism (portfolio of published work required).

Quality and feasibility of proposed investigative story pitch.

Clarity of motivation and commitment to accountability journalism.
