Citizen Science Story Grants in Ghana
Citizen Science Story Grants in Ghana; Over the past three years, EJF and the Fisheries Commission have trained artisanal fishers from eight coastal communities (Axim • Shama • Sekondi • Elmina • Apam • Bortianor • Tema • Keta) to act as citizen scientists.
Fishers collect biological data on species composition, gonad maturity, and other parameters for key small pelagic species (Round sardinella • Flat sardinella • European anchovy).
EJF’s report shows 92% of participating fishers demonstrated strong scientific understanding of the closed season, compared to 78% of non‑participants.
Nearly half reported improved trust and collaboration with regulators.
