Main purpose of the Job
To manage the circulation desk and provide service to the patrons of the Library (students and faculty and perform clerical and other library work as required.

Duties

• Performs circulation desk procedures, e.g., checking in and check-out materials, registering patrons and collecting fees and fines;
• Checks in deliveries of library loan materials;
• Processes, withdraws, repairs or re-conditions library materials;
• Shelves library materials;
• Assists with library programmes and displays;
• Assists library users with ready reference questions and reader advisory bibliographic instruction and database searching;
• Assists patrons with mechanical operations of library equipment;
  • Performs other related work and assignments as required.

    Qualifications

    • Diploma in Information Studies
    • Bachelor’s degree will be an added advantage.

    • Ability to operate library machines;
    • Proficiency in ICT.
    • Customer relations;
    • Planning and organization;
    • Excellent documentation skills;
    • Interpersonal skills;
    • Excellent writing and communication skills;

    Experience

    At least 3 years working experience in a busy Library.

    University Librarian

    Location: The Proposed Amref International University, Nairobi

    The Deputy Librarian is responsible for planning, developing and administering the Library which include acquisition and processing of library resources such as books, periodicals, electronic and multi-media products, lending services and administrative functions.

    The Deputy Librarian will provide support to the University Librarian in achieving the expected results especially advancing Amref International University’s teaching and research.

    Responsibilities

    • Develop a system to procure effective print and electronic resources in the areas of academic focus by AMIU, and oversee the implementation of Collection Development Policy, Circulation Policy and others.
    • Maintain constant contact with publishers, vendors and other institutions, to identify resources for procuring;
    • Constantly work with the academic and non-academic staff and students to elicit current subject interests and the project areas they are involved in;
    • Constantly update the Bibliographic database with new titles;
    • Appraise and update library materials;
    • Direct and supervise the Assistant Librarians and support staff;
    • Identify skills of staff and recommended training programmes to enhance skills and performance;
    • Provide inputs for fundraising and forecasting budget requirements;
    • Report activities to the University Librarian on weekly basis.

    Qualifications

    • Master’s degree in Library Science/Information Science/Documentation;

    Experience

    • Ten (10) years of post-qualification experience in leading a reputed academic institution (library or research institution);
    • Evidence of innovative library service and organization of published work;
    • Professional commitment and experience in digitalization of the library.
    • Librarianship professional and technical expertise.

    • Supervisory and supportive skills.

    Reporting to:
    Vice Chancellor

    Location: The Proposed Amref International University, Nairobi

    The University Librarian provides leadership to ensure the library excels in the provision of support to teaching, learning, research and community service. She/he will be responsible for acquiring, organizing, managing and sharing library resources.

    The University Librarian’s position is people centered requiring the individual to manage library resources and respond to library users needs.

    Responsibilities

    • Selecting, developing, cataloguing and classifying library resources;
    • Supporting teaching, learning and research to advance the mission of the University;
    • Maintaining library catalogues and making them easy to use;
    • Management of staff, including recruitment, training and/or supervisory duties;
    • Liaising with academic staff, external organisations and suppliers;
    • Ensuring that the library services meet the needs of particular groups of users (staff, undergraduate and post graduate students, disabled students and others);
    • Functioning as the chief fiscal officer by fundraising, managing budgets and other resources;
    • Promoting the library resources to users;
    • Managing the library infrastructure (buildings, furniture and equipment);
    • Participating in the administration of the university through Senate, Senate Library Committee and the Dean and Heads of the Academic Programmes.
    • Serving as the ambassador and advocate for the library by developing partnerships with other libraries in Kenya, region and internationally.

    Qualifications & Knowledge

    • A highly qualified candidate who is a holder of: PhD, Masters Degree in Library Information
    Management.

    • Expertise in library functions, e.g., cataloguing, acquisition, among others;
    • Proficiency in ICT, databases and the internet;
    • Fundraising and resource mobilization skills;

    • Cultivate Integrity, commitment and respect for diversity;
    • Team player and collaborator.

    Experience

    • At least 10 years working experience, 5 (five) of which worked in a University Library;
    • Proven experience in fundraising.
