La Trobe University is inviting applications from local & international students for its PhD Scholarships in Transforming Human Societies.

THS offers a stimulating research environment for higher degree research students with opportunities to interact with world leading researchers at La Trobe.

Fields of Study

Applicants will have the opportunity to choose their supervisor from many disciplines including: anthropology, archaeology, cultural studies, historical studies, law, philosophy, political science, social work, sociology, urban and regional planning, banking, finance and investment, business and management, psychology and genetics.

Research Themes

THS is offering three PhD scholarships to research in one of the following three research themes:

Understanding human origins, mobility and insecurity

Understanding social and cultural change

Achieving social justice with sustainability

Areas of Research

Human Rights, Gender and Sexuality

Migration and Mobilities – Ancient and Modern

Indigenous Peoples – Australia and International

Sustainability and Social Justice

Political and Economic Change

La Trobe University PhD Scholarships Information

The offered scholarships are for 3 years, with a remuneration of $30,000 per annum.

La Trobe University PhD Scholarships - Eligibility Criteria

Applications are open to local and international students.

Applicants must:

Already have a completed Honours degree (min) with a H1 result (or international equivalent) and an academic background relevant to the proposed area of study;

Not be currently enrolled in a higher degree;

Align closely with a research cluster and preferably have discussed their project with a cluster leader;

Have identified a supervisor and have that supervisor’s endorsement;

Be able to commence study before 1 June of the following year.

La Trobe University PhD Scholarships - Application Process

Applicants must download the PhD Scholarship coversheet from the website.

Applicants must submit the following documents via email:
- RFA THS PhD Scholarship coversheet
- CV
- A one page statement outlining your experience, training and expertise relevant to the proposed project
- 300-400 word summary of your proposed project
- A certified academic transcript of results
- An IELTS (or equivalent) certified result (for international applicants)
- Two Confidential Academic Referee reports using the template provided at the website.
