Position: Senior Project Manager for Google Impacts Labs

Location: Nairobi

Program / Department Summary: Mercy Corps implements high-quality, analytical development work in very difficult places.

The program seeks to facilitate sustainable tech-enabled employment solutions in collaboration with the private sector to bridge skills and opportunity gaps for youth.

Product innovations could exist in the job-matching space, in the connection of youth to other livelihoods opportunities in the formal or informal sectors, integration of technology into vocational training, or more.

In Kenya, the program will seek to stimulate solutions serving vulnerable youth populations in Kenya, particularly in areas of geographic vulnerability including North Rift and areas around the LAPSSET corridor and other underserved markets.

General Position Summary: The Senior Project Manager will be responsible for the overall country-level strategy, implementation, and operational/financial management of the Google Impact Labs project.

The role requires excellent strategic thinking, as well as excellence in partnership development, which is the core work of the program.

S/he will develop a pipeline of technology and private sector partners capable of developing game changing innovations, and facilitate relationships with complementary employers, governmental bodies, training institutes, or others.

S/he will work with these partners to help identify potential product innovations and sustainable solutions, and to convene the right partners to make it a reality.

S/he is an excellent dealmaker capable of aligning varying incentives and driving projects through a range of challenges.

S/he will function as the country-level focal point to the Program Director, and will maintain financial, operational and programmatic oversight to ensure that the program achieves maximum impact.

Essential Job Functions:

Strategy Development
  • Work with Impact Labs Program Director to develop the strategy and implementation plan for Impact Labs in Kenya;
  • Map out viable partners and opportunities in a range of economic sectors from construction to retail and agriculture;
  • Revise strategy in line with emerging opportunities, including refinement of sectoral and operational focus.
  • Partnership Development & Relationship Management
  • Develop a pipeline of potential partnerships, covering a breadth of organizations including job matching, training and more;
  • Maintain strong connections with the regional start-up scene, maintaining responsiveness to opportunities.

    Product Innovation
  • Work creatively with target partners to ideate and co-develop concepts for new products and services;
  • Ensure effective coordination and collaboration with program partners, including private sector actors, national and international NGO partners and Government entities, and consistently cultivate new relationships.
  • Program, Operational and Financial Management
    Develop, manage, and revise program budgets worth over $1m. Ensure rigorous accountability to donor rules and regulations and that all spending is donor-compliant and program-effective;
  • Work collaboratively with support departments (Finance, Procurement and Logistics and HR) to ensure effective and timely delivery of activities;
  • Ensure that effective program management tools are in place, and that the project is delivered on time, scope and budget;
  • Take an adaptive management approach to develop and innovate new processes, activities or services to improve impact.
  • Partner Administration and Support
  • Function as a focal point for contracting and partner management;
  • Provide technical support to partners, including
    on market research, product development, human-centered design and contract external support where required;
  • Convene different actors and stakeholders for collaborations, where appropriate.
  • M&E and Learning
  • Work with M&E staff to establish methods for measuring and evaluating impact;
  • Participate in, and generate insights, for
  • Thought Leadership events on innovation and business solutions to youth employment.
  • Ensure that an effective communication strategy is in place to share program progress and successes with program donors, HQ, Government and other stakeholders.

    Other
  • Conduct himself/herself both professionally and personally in such a manner as to bring credit to Mercy Corps and to not jeopardize its humanitarian mission;
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Accountability to Beneficiaries: Mercy Corps team members are expected to support all efforts toward accountability, specifically to our beneficiaries and to international standards guiding international relief and development work, while actively engaging beneficiary communities as equal partners in the design, monitoring and evaluation of our field projects.

  • Supervisory Responsibility: Product Innovation and Partnerships Manager and Results Learning and Research Coordinator

    Accountability

    Reports Directly To: Impact Labs Program Director

    Works Directly With: HR, Logistics, Operations, Impact Labs MEL Coordinator and Impact Labs partners.

    Knowledge and Experience:
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience managing market development programs, or a combination of strategy and business consulting, impact investment, product design, or relevant areas;
  • Demonstrated experience working with and through partners especially private sector partners on joint initiatives/businesses;
  • BA/S or equivalent in information technology or related field of study. An MBA is an added advantage;
  • Experience in Management/Development consulting firms or business incubators/accelerators working with start-ups & SMEs on business modelling, strategy and/or product development is required;
  • Experience working in/with start-ups a plus.
  • Experience related to employment generation is an added advantage;
  • Must have prior experience managing team members;
  • Experience working with impact investment is an added advantage;
  • Demonstrated ability to design and implement strategy;
  • Exceptional writing skills, and ability to present complex concepts and/or analysis clearly.
  • Experience in, and passion for, youth employment a plus.
  • Success Factors: The successful Senior Program Manager will be a self-starter and a doer, capable of driving partnerships with minimal supervision.
