The Need

International Justice Mission (IJM) is a global non-governmental human rights organization which protects the poor from violence by rescuing victims, bringing the criminals to justice, restoring survivors to safety and strength, and helping local law enforcement build a safe future that lasts.

International Justice Mission (IJM) Uganda is working in partnership with the government and other agencies to build capacity for the public justice system to provide justice for survivors of Violence against Women and Children (VAW/C), including intimate partner violence and forms of sexual violence.

IJM is seeking a talented National Director, Social Protection (SVAC/VAW). who is passionate about justice and highly motivated to use their skills and experience to effect positive change in our project areas within Uganda.

The National Director, Social Protection (SVAC/VAW). will be part of the National Office in Uganda supporting multi-disciplinary system reform and casework teams working across Uganda Field Offices and will play a central role in building the capacity of the justice and social welfare officials to respond to crimes of sexual violence against children (SVAC) and violence against women in a trauma-informed and client-friendly manner.

This position is based in Kampala, Uganda and requires frequent travel within Uganda. The position reports to the National Director, Uganda and is expected to keep in close communication with the Regional Aftercare Specialist and the Field Office Directors within Uganda.

Responsibilities

Development of National Aftercare Projects/Products

  • Assist on the creation of specific national "products" (i.e. tools, resources and trainings) for use internally and with external stakeholders
  • Engage in research projects as needed
    Contextualize HQ tools & trainings as needed and oversee the translation process
  • Deliver trainings in-person as needed
    Technical Aftercare Program Expertise/Support
  • Thorough understanding of needs/challenges of programs (SR & casework) and help pioneer solutions
  • Provide extra technical support to some internal aftercare programs
  • Collect national best practices/learnings for Aftercare
  • Monitor that aftercare programs (internal & with partners) are being implemented well
  • Monitor Aftercare data collection and analysis
  • Monitor that PJS & support system capacity building (survivor protection & care) is moving in the right direction (2030)
  • Bring relevant issues/needs to the attention of HQ
  • Help with AC 3.0 rollout in all offices and ensure successful ground level execution
  • Consult regularly with the IJM Uganda Directors of Aftercare to give and receive feedback on case development, aftercare strategies, roadblocks and PJS strategic support opportunities; and
    2030 Vision Alignment & Aftercare Strategy
  • Consistently communicate with aftercare staff & field leaders about the changing focus for aftercare/survivor protection
  • Communicate Aftercare Field priorities to HQ Aftercare Specialist and work towards alignment on 2030 vision strategy
  • Represent the aftercare pillar on the IJM Uganda Leadership Team and in project design efforts
    Represent IJM at social service conferences in Uganda and engage in networking with strategic stakeholders, as needed

    Global Aftercare Projects

  • Give input on Global Aftercare projects/products/guidelines
  • Assist on execution for rollout of Global tools/products/program guidelines/AC 3.0 changes
    Miscellaneous:
  • Participate in IJM’s spiritual formation, staff care, and professional development programs;
  • Proactively keep healthy relationships both internal and external to IJM;
  • Update and use IJM’s Casework Tracking Management System and other monitoring and evaluation tools;
    and
    Perform other related duties and tasks as assigned by the National Director.

    Travel Requirements

  • The position is based in Kampala and requires up to 20 weeks of travel per year. Required Skills and Experience
  • Fluency in oral and written communication in English;
  • Master’s Degree social work, counseling, or psychology preferred;
  • At least eight years’ experience in the field of social work;
  • Minimum of four years’ experience in successfully leading and managing teams of aftercare professionals; and
  • Experience building teams, mentoring and coaching aftercare workers, creatively assessing information, mobilizing aftercare teams, and communicating in cross-cultural environments. Critical Qualities
