ILRI – DAAD PhD Graduate Climate Smart Interventions to improve fodder quality and quantity Fellowships

Introduction

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), in partnership with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) In-Country/In-Region Scholarships Programme seeks to recruit a PhD graduate fellow to undertake a research study on Climate Smart Interventions to improve fodder quality and quantity.

The Position:

The potential candidate will carry out an agronomic experiment focusing on specific – sustainable and easy to achieve – interventions to improve fodder yields and fodder quality. The experiment will be linked and fully complementary to an existing animal feeding trial and evaluate additional options that aim at not only improving yields but also at reducing negative environmental consequences and the improvement of overall soil fertility.

ILRI Program: Sustainable Livestock Systems
Main ILRI Project Title: In situ assessment of Green House Gas (GHG) emissions from two livestock systems in East Africa – determining current status and quantifying mitigation options
Graduate fellows project title: Climate Smart Interventions to improve fodder quality and quantity
CGIAR Research Program (CRP) linkage: Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security

Responsibilities:

  • Carrying out in-situ measurements of GHG emissions from five different forage trials and replicates on ILRI Nairobi farm. Measurements include GHG emissions, soil fertility, forage yields and forage quality.
  • Statistically analyze the results and publish these in peer-reviewed journals.
  • To contribute and synthesize the knowledge into follow-up experiments as well as to assist in transferring the gained knowledge into practice.

    Qualifications

  • MSc in agronomy, agricultural sciences, environmental sciences or related disciplines
  • Experience with GHG emission measurement in the field is a must
  • Statistical skills such as experience with Microsoft Excel is expected, other knowledge in statistical software’s such as R or python is beneficial
  • Excellent English skills in oral and written form
  • An effective and energetic team player with the ability to work in a multidisciplinary and multi-cultural environment.

DAAD promotes international academic exchange as well as educational co-operation with developing countries through a variety of funding and scholarship programs.

    The Position:

The PhD will lie within the Feed and Forage Program and be part of a Bill and Melinda Gates five – year feed project funded in Ethiopia and Burkina Faso. Development of feed supply demand scenarios plays a very significant part in this project. The PhD will be based in Burkina Faso, but significant time will be spent in Ethiopia.

ILRI Program: Feed and Forage Development
Main ILRI Project Title: Livestock Systems Innovation Lab: research on animal feed and on campylobacter in Sub-Saharan Africa
Graduate fellows project title: Development of nation-wide interactive decision-making tools around feed supply- demand in Ethiopia and Burkina

    Faso
CGIAR Research Program (CRP) linkage: Livestock

    Responsibilities:

  • Locate and match secondary data sets about cropping and land use patterns and livestock census in Burkina Faso and Ethiopia
  • Develop algorithms to convert estimated feed biomass into available nutrients (protein, metabolizable energy) and predict capability of feed resources to provide for livestock maintenance and production
  • Conduct a sensitivity analysis of results, identify gaps and develop strategies to close these gaps
  • With provision of necessary assistance, develop web, tablet, phone based applications that provide information about current feed supply and demand and that offer change of input variables on the feed and the livestock side

    Qualifications

  • MSc in Animal Nutrition, Natural Resource Management with good computing skills
  • Proficiency in French and English Language
  • An effective and energetic team player with the ability to work in a multidisciplinary and multi-cultural environment.

ILRI Social networks, risk management and uptake of improved dairy technologies

    The Position:

Much recent work on uptake of technologies in low and middle-income countries has tended to focus on farm level characteristics with little appreciation of how social capital influences technology uptake in small holder systems. Technological growth is often inhibited by risk aversion and productivity gains are often under realized. Collaborative ventures, through farmer social networks, have the potential to diffuse the risk associated with uptake of new technologies.

    Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed research proposal within the parameters outlined above
  • Conduct farm and community level research using quantitative and qualitative approaches to explore how social connectedness influences willingness to innovate
  • Analyse and interpret data
  • Write reports and journal articles
Interact with the wider project team

    Qualifications

  • MSc in a relevant discipline
Understanding and experience of smallholder systems in Sub-Saharan Africa
  • Ability to produce written work of high quality
  • Ability to work in multi-cultural/multi-disciplinary teams
  • Willingness to spend considerable periods in challenging rural locations for field work
  • Evidence of initiative and ability to work independently
  • An effective and energetic team player with the ability to work in a multidisciplinary and multi-cultural environment.
  • Ability to work independently, multi-task and meet tight deadlines.
  • The applicant must be a citizen of a country in sub-Saharan Africa.
  • The Master’s degree must have been completed less than six years ago at the time of application
