ILRI Bioinformatician Jobs in Kenya

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Bioinformatician to provide high-quality ‘-omics’ data analyses and interpretation to various projects, and support bioinformatics capacity building at the BecA-ILRI


ILRI works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centres dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world.

Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa.

Responsibilities

  • Perform computational analyses of complex genomics and other ‘-omics’ datasets (sequence alignments, FASTA, SAM/BAM and VCF files, phylogenetic trees, etc), provide synthetic and graphical representations of the results, and interpret the same.
  • Make the most effective use of the computational resources on ILRI’s High Performance Cluster. Participate actively in the development of in-house scripts and pipelines to be hosted on BecA’s GitHub account and other ad-hoc storage space. Use and develop Galaxy pipelines whenever necessary.
  • Participate in the designing, planning and delivering capacity building activities such as short training workshops, seminars, Bioinformatics Community of Practice, etc.
  • Provide informed advice to the Bioinformatics Scientist and the Technology Manager on questions pertaining to the maintenance and development of the bioinformatics platform (on both hardware and software aspects).
  • Contribute to the resource mobilisation efforts, be they in human resource (e.g. recruiting external trainers for workshops) or financial resource (e.g. writing grant proposals).
  • Support student supervision and academic capacity building activities, especially in the frameworks of the EANBiT and AfriqueOne-ASPIRE initiatives.

    Requirements

  • MSc in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Molecular Biology or a related field.
  • 3 years’ work experience in a bioinformatics position High proficiency in the use of Unix platforms (commandline environments, Bash scripting, grep, sed and awk utilities, etc)
  • High proficiency in scripting languages (proficiency in R is necessary,
    plus at least one of the two languages Python and Perl)
  • Demonstrated experience in working on an HPC through a job scheduler (e.g. Slurm or Sun Grid Engine)
  • Broad knowledge in Genetics, Biotechnology, Computational Biology and their applications.
  • Previous experience with NGS data will be highly appreciated
  • Proven ability to work efficiently as part of a group, to propose innovative ideas and to participate in their implementation
  • Any teaching/training experience will be highly appreciated

    Terms of Appointment

    This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position based at ILRI’s Nairobi campus. It is open to Kenyan nationals only. The position is on a 3-year contract, renewable subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding.

    Job Level

    This position is at job level 2D and open to Kenyan nationals only. ILRI offers a competitive salary and benefits package which includes; pension, medical and other insurances for ILRI’s Nationally Recruited Staff.
