Responsibilities

  • Undertake pioneering research to assess the distribution, abundance, migration, dynamics and host plants of FAW within diverse cereal-based cropping systems in East Africa;
  • Design laboratory- and field-based assays to understand the multitrophic level interactions among cereal pests (including FAW), their host plants, and natural enemies across a diverse landscape structure;
  • Understand the impacts of associated landscapes on the FAW ecology and management (in partnership with the GIS and Earth Observation team), and design and test ecological engineering approaches to promote
    sustainable management of FAW;
  • Assess the environmental impacts and interactions of various management strategies for FAW control;
  • Determine the efficacy of various FAW management tools in various cereal-based cropping systems (in collaboration with the Plant Health Theme scientists) and how to integrate them into an IPM strategy;
  • Based on the outcomes of the above actions, design and optimise effective cropping systems for FAW control;
  • Demonstrate and promote such effective cropping systems for FAW control to cereal growers and extension service providers in East Africa, in partnership with the Technology Transfer Unit;
  • Participate in development of grants and resource mobilisation, to strengthen cropping systems research
    within the Plant Health Theme;
  • Supervise junior scientists and graduate students (MSc and PhD) in the field of cropping systems entomology;
  • Publish research outputs in high impact peer reviewed journals.

    Requirements/Qualifications

  • PhD in a field related to life sciences, especially entomology/crop protection.
  • At least 3–5 years of postdoctoral experience in relevant research, as outlined above.
  • Broad knowledge on cropping systems research/landscape ecology/multitrophic interactions in agricultural systems, as evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed high impact journals;
  • Experience with upstream to downstream research activities that ensures impact on beneficiaries through partnerships;
  • Excellent oral and written English communication skills.
  • Proven track record of successful resource mobilisation and project implementation in cropping systems research, with a focus on insects.
  • Field and laboratory experimental design, and data collection, handling, analysis and reporting.
  • Experience in supervision of MSc and PhD student research.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, and in statistical tools and software, preferably
  • Prior experience in working in developing countries will be an advantage.
