Heshima Kenya Amplify Change Project

In 2015, Heshima Kenya was selected by IDEOS org through a challenge by name Amplify Change to pilot in designing business opportunities for refugee women in Nairobi, Kenya.

This project was to be implemented through Heshima Kenya Sexual and Gender Based Program that deals with detection/identification, prevention and response to SGBV among refugee communities in Nairobi. A prototype project was implemented for 3 months between October - December 2015. By February 2016, funding to scale up the project for one year was approved with implementation commencing in April 2016 and ending by 31st March 2017.

The project has been addressing the question of how best Heshima Kenya can provide economic and social services to empower refugee women in Nairobi through business start-up incubation or links to employment opportunities. By working with IDEO.org, Heshima aimed to provide refugee women with technical skills on various livelihoods avenues, microloans, psychosocial support, and social support through monthly food baskets, and medical care and education services so they can start small businesses and build productive livelihoods.

So far, Heshima has dug into some research to understand what the biggest challenges have been for refugee women who have started businesses. To date Heshima Kenya has reached over 75 women through provision of micro loans and the other above aforementioned interventions.
