Roles for the Communication Officer Job

  • Under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative for Kenya, the direct supervision of the Land Programme Manager and in close collaboration with other project staff and national project partners, the incumbent will:
  • Operationalize the Communication and Visibility Plan for the land programme and ensure that the project is in line with the overall communication strategy of the representation.
  • Support public communication activities for the programme. These include preparation of talking points, speeches, photo coverage, media advisories and press releases.
  • Manage interviews and maintain contacts with the media for interviews and events.
  • Support the Capacity Development activities within communications: digital, public communications and media engagement.
  • Design, develop and disseminate information of interest with the aim of educating key stakeholders, including the public, regarding the results of the programs, projects and activities being undertaken under the Land programme, to benefit the country’s development.
  • Liaise with the Communication for Development (ComDev) unit of the Regional Office and Headquarters, and the Corporate Communications unit, particularly on matters of compliance and updates (e.g. branding and ensuring relevant codes are taken into consideration) and support to the programme.
  • Ensure effective liaison with local and national authorities, key partners, and stakeholders on a regular basis.
  • Support in editing of texts and or publications, books and any other materials to be published under the project.
  • Support the strengthening of media relations and public visibility as well as relations with development partners, donors and governments, to ensure that the above objectives are fulfilled.
  • Support the development of relevant documentation and audio-visual materials
    to facilitate the programme’s implementation.
  • Evaluate the performance of the communication/visibility strategies and provide appropriate guidance on how to reach key audience better.
  • Support in monitoring and evaluation of communication materials.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

    Job Requirements

  • University degree in communications, public relations or other relevant qualification.
  • 5 years of relevant experience at the national or international level.
  • Knowledge and experience with communication for development tools.
  • Graphic design skills.
  • Great understanding of overall organizational strategies and alignment of communication strategy to the same.
  • Hands-on experience in journalism or public relations.
  • Excellent command of English, communication skills, ability to operate under pressure.
  • Reporting and briefing skills is an additional asset to the position.
