agriculture competitive and profitable as well as sustainable and resilient.

CIAT conducts research for development in tropical regions of Latin America, Africa, and Asia (www.ciat.cgiar.org).

Project Information:

The Technologies for African Agricultural Transformation (TAAT) is a program initiated by the African Development Bank (AfDB) as part of its Feed Africa Initiative.

The main objective of the program is to improve the business of agriculture across Africa by raising agricultural productivity, mitigating risks and promoting diversification and processing in 18 agricultural
value chains within 8 Priority Intervention Areas.


The Finance Assistant (TAAT) is part of the finance team and works closely with IITA, and the AFDB’s TAAT clearing house in supporting the budgeting process, financial and treasury management, financial reporting and attending to program audit processes to ensure timely and efficient accounting support to the TAAT program.

Main duties and responsibilities include:

Budgeting and approvals

  • Prepare program budget and ensure the Full Cost Recovery (FCR) Policy is being applied
  • Generate the program's annual budget distribution according with the research activities and the scientists’ input
  • Arrange monthly follow-up meetings with the program leader to review and verify budget execution, personnel distribution and cost recovery
  • Approve requisitions for program operations, new staff positions and personnel contract renewals

    Financial and treasury management

  • Preparation of procurement lists for approval by VC coordinator in accordance with AFDB guidelines
  • Preparation of program cash flows for approval by VC coordinator in accordance with the approved program work plans
  • Preparation of program payments
  • Preparation of bank reconciliations
  • Preparation of Statement of Expenditures (SOEs) in accordance with AFDB guidelines
  • Monitor program fund and ensure adequate fund are available for value chain activities by submitting replenishment
    request to IITA Program Management Unit as at when due

    Financial Reporting

  • Review and verify partners financial reports ensuring compliance with CIAT policies, project and bank guidelines
  • Timely compilation and submission of duly approved financial reports to IITA PMU in accordance with program grant agreement

    Capacity building

  • Engage with program partners and provide timely training regarding program (AFDB) financial requirements and guidelines
  • Attend training from IITA PMU on compliance requirements of the program (AFDB)
  • Relay the knowledge to program teams and ensure
    program implementation is compliant with requirements International Centre for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT)
  • Attend to program audit processes


    The candidate shall have the following competencies, skills and experience:

  • Degree in a relevant subject with proven finance and accounting skills
  • Should have attained full CPA-K qualification
  • At least five (3) years of relevant work experience in a closely related field gained in an international organization;
  • Prior experience with donor funded projects
  • High level of computer skills, ability to handle complex financial and accounting systems including knowledge of Oracle and ability to learn new applications quickly
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision, but also participate as a team member in accomplishment of duties
  • Possess excellent analytical skills, respect for confidentiality and high level of integrity
  • Good communication skills with a positive attitude and a strong service orientation
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment.

    Terms of employment:

    This a nationally recruited position and will be based at the CIAT Africa Regional Offices in Nairobi, Kenya. The contract will
    be for a one-year period, subject to probation period of three (3) months, renewable depending on performance and availability of resources.
