BOMA implements a high-impact, data-driven poverty graduation program in the arid and semi-arid lands of Eastern Africa that provides ultra-poor women with seed capital and financial and life skills training, enabling them to start a business and establish savings to pay for food and school fees, and obtain medical care for their families.


BOMA Project Director of Research, Evaluation and Learning Jobs in Kenya

Position Summary:

The Director of Research, Evaluation and Learning (DREL) provides leadership and expertise to develop and ensure best in class Research, Evaluation and Learning practice at the BOMA Project. The DREL is an active member of the Leadership Team and coordinates closely with the Deputy Director, Director of Strategic Partnerships, Director of Programs & Innovation, the East Africa Regional Director and the Manager of Monitoring & Evaluation in Kenya, to promote BOMA’s mission. While BOMA is based in Manchester, VT, working remotely from another location in the United States is possible. The position requires periodic travel to VT in addition to quarterly travel to Kenya. Key responsibilities include:

Responsibilities

  • Refine and lead BOMA’s program research and learning strategy.
    Work closely with the Kenya-based Monitoring &
  • Evaluation Manager.
    Provide strategic and technical guidance to the Kenya-based M&E Unit, reviewing and analyzing M&E activities and outputs, troubleshooting and advising on course corrections as needed.
  • In collaboration with the Kenya M&E Manager, coordinate and provide oversight of the activities of external evaluation firms and researchers. This includes activities related to a quasi-experimental evaluation conducted by an outside firm and a randomized control trial developed in partnership with the University of California Davis and the International Livestock Research Institute.
  • Be responsible for the collaborative development of BOMA’s learning agenda and lead efforts to disseminate knowledge both internally and externally.
  • Design research projects, their methodology and metrics, and learning initiatives to fill knowledge gaps in BOMA’s approach and in the field.
  • Ensure learning improves program design and implementation and feeds into adaptive management.
  • Lead ongoing efforts to build monitoring, evaluation and research capacities of key staff.
  • Steward the ongoing development and implementation of BOMA’s Salesforce-based Performance Insights system.
  • Support software and database design efforts by staff and vendors.
  • Analyze primary and secondary quantitative and qualitative data using software such as Stata.
  • Produce clear, compelling, and methodologically robust reports, journal articles and policy briefs.

    Qualifications

  • Value commitment to the mission of The BOMA Project.
  • Strong foundation in experimental design, statistical methods, qualitative and quantitative methods.
  • Ability to lead the design of experimental and quasi-experimental evaluations.
  • Strong data analysis skills with experience in at least one statistical package software for quantitative data analysis (SPSS, STATA).
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Strong technology competencies and the ability to manage projects with software development partners. Salesforce experience is a plus.
  • Ability to work and lead in a globally distributed, multi-cultural environment.
  • Willingness to travel to remote and difficult contexts in Kenya and East Africa.
  • Ability to work remotely and with others that work remotely.

    BOMA Project Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning Manager Jobs in Kenya

    Job Summary

    The ideal candidate is a data-driven, analytical, detail-oriented individual with experience managing M&E,

    conducting field assessments and household surveys. He or she is both hands-on and able to do project design, planning, project management, and analysis and is passionate about women’s economic empowerment.

    Responsibilities

  • Develop a comprehensive reporting framework targeted at different internal and external audiences and working in collaboration with the Director of Research, Evaluation and Learning, the Director of Program and Innovation, and the data analysts, develop regular reports to guide management decision-making.
  • Develop and implement Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning plans for all projects
  • Oversee data collection activities, including coordination of enumerator training, as well as the design and implementation of quantitative and qualitative surveys, impact assessments and longevity studies.
  • In close coordination with the Salesforce team, oversee innovations around digital data collection and apps for monitoring activities as well as the design and maintenance of BOMA’s customized Salesforce relational database, Performance Insights.
  • Spearhead the development of the capacity of staff to understand and reflect on data and the use of monitoring and evaluation tools to support learning and adaptive management.
  • In close collaboration with Director of Research, Evaluation and Learning build evidence of impact of BOMA’s graduation model through collaborating with research bodies to carry out successful targeted research and analysis towards BOMA’s influence and government adoption goals.
  • Manage and report on periodic evaluations both internally and with external consultants of BOMA’s innovations and interventions and their contribution to increasing impact per dollar, and achieving Kenya government’s strategies and plans
  • Lead in the writing up of monitoring and evaluation reports
    Promote a culture of data demand and use within BOMA
  • Support documentation and dissemination of generated research, analysis and learning internally and externally.

    Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree, MBA or advanced degree in Monitoring & Evaluation preferred
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience setting up M&E systems
  • Formal specific M&E training and/or specialized skills in statistics is an advantage
  • Must have analytical experience with analytical tools like STATA or SPSS
  • Experience in survey design, data collection, data processing and analysis
  • Experience using Collaborating, Adapting and Learning practices preferred
  • Commitment to the mission of the BOMA Project.
  • Experience working in fast paced and high growth environments
  • Ability to work well with others and to develop and maintain relationships with project staff, donors, and other partners
  • Field experience in the arid lands, preferably in East Africa and demonstrated intercultural competence and sensibility
  • Demonstrated experience in all stages of developing and implementing project monitoring and evaluation systems
  • Demonstrated skills in data collection, data analysis, documentation, data interpretation, and reporting.
  • Demonstrated experience in management position in an INGO would be an advantage
  • Experience working on USAID-funded projects preferred
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills
  • Strong communication skills (English language), both written and spoken
  • Extensive knowledge in computer applications such as Excel, Word, Access and PowerPoint required. Knowledge of Salesforce and Taroworks would be an advantage.
  • Ability to build the capacity of and direct a team
