Introduction

The BBC World Service is embarking on an exciting journey with unprecedented investment in digital content for Africa and your role will be critical to us in meeting our ambitions. The BBC will be launching a new digital innovation hub in Nairobi with the ambition to develop digital journalism in Africa.

Responsibilities

  • To work with the digital editor to fully scope the editorial portfolio for the team
  • To be the on ground team lead working to briefs from the Digital Editor with the mandate to inspire and ensure the team is meeting our editorial standards
  • To pitch in and contribute and create digital content
  • Working with the Digital Editor you will be receiving and approving commissions from daily news teams, planning, TV, deployments and editors
  • To work in partnership with editorial colleagues to deliver outstanding, distinctive, multi-platform, interactive and social media content by providing the ways to realise editorial ambitions within operational constraints.
  • To manage innovation and change, and to drive continuous improvement throughout production.
  • Where necessary you will need to; to recruit, train and develop staff new to the platform and ensuring a constant flow of new talent and ideas.
  • Work with the Digital Editor to pilot a series of innovative digital content ideas leading to a long-term impact on the content and services we offer to audiences

    Qualifications

  • Clear evidence of storytelling on digital platforms
  • Strong digital skills, an excellent understanding of the social media environment,
  • Proven track record of innovation with the ability to lead teams and deliver to deadline
  • To commission digital content and give clear instructions to members of the team as well as producers and reporters.
  • Experience of converting teams and organizations to embrace and implement new digital work practices
  • Proven editorial judgment and flair, able to make sound decisions quickly.

    BBC Senior Broadcast Journalist (Digital) Employment Opportunities in Kenya

    Responsibilities

  • To work as part of the editorial/production team in Nairobi for the BBC Africa Digital Innovation Hub
  • The journalist is expected to have strong writing skills and proven understanding of African news, current affairs, social media and it’s advantageous if the candidate boasts a thematic specialism.
  • The journalist will be expected to originate, prepare and publish pages of multi-media news, background, analysis, features and video.
  • A key part of the job will be to work closely with colleagues from BBC Africa, who work in English and other languages, to ensure the best of their radio, TV, online and social content is made available to the African hub and wider BBC and make sure that content conforms to BBC editorial standards.
  • To produce and commission short-form and long-form digital content
  • To gather content for digital platforms from the field
  • Contribute to the BBC News website’s Africa desk. The journalist will build on our existing African coverage, including the Africa Live page
  • To create digital video, write for our website and other social platforms and promote our content in an engaging format with the audience.

    Qualifications

  • Proven text journalism writing and editing skills, using outstanding English
  • Broad knowledge of and interest in African affairs
  • Ability to produce clean news stories, under the tightest of deadlines
  • Ability to produce original, richly-illustrated features which demonstrate a deep understanding of the issue
  • Ability to work within a team, and provide leadership to less experienced colleagues
  • Good understanding of social media and user generated content, and of different digital platforms and devices
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the BBC’s editorial policy and practice and of the law relating to broadcast and interactive journalism
  • Proven commitment to equality and diversity and the maintenance of health and safety standards

    BBC Senior Broadcast Journalist (Video) Employment Opportunities in Kenya

    Responsibilities

  • Work with other members of the Somali and East Africa team, and the wider BBC Africa newsroom, to identify and produce creative and innovative video news content.
  • Re-version BBC material with a mobile audience in mind.
  • Research, storyboard and produce stories.
  • Create headlines and video teasers to promote our stories and reach as wide an audience as possible.
  • Contribute ideas and angles to meetings on how to cover the main news of the day.
  • To show visual creativity in the use of pictures and graphics to illustrate and explain fast-moving events and complex stories.
  • Understand the video requirements of different social platforms.
  • Working to short deadlines for breaking and developing stories.

    Qualifications

  • A full command and up to date knowledge of written and spoken Somali
  • A good knowledge of English including complete comprehension of written and spoken English and the ability to communicate effectively
  • Experience of video production, editing and storytelling.
  • In depth understanding of digital and social platforms.
  • Experience of using video editing software similar to Q-edit or FCPX.
    Wide and up to date familiarity with Africa and
  • East African affairs and an in-depth understanding of history, politics, social issues and culture as well as the changing needs of the audience.
  • Must be able to work well and calmly in a live newsroom environment; handle a rapidly changing news agenda, and have the temperament to enjoy the process.

    BBC Senior Broadcast Journalist (Social Media) Employment Opportunities in Kenya

    Responsibilities

  • To lead and develop a fresh and innovative creative approach to curating, publishing and editing stories for BBC Somali social media platforms.
  • To create content for social- videos, online, gifs, pictures, Facebook lives, Instagram stories, etc.
  • To manage the interactive offer across all social media platforms.
  • To be up to date with the new trends on social media and react accordingly.
  • Test and provide feedback on new social tools. Provide training where necessary.
  • Ensure all content published and commissioned adheres to BBC's Editorial Guidelines and commitment to the editorial aims of BBC News.
  • You’ll be expected to represent your service and can be called on to share regional knowledge across BBC outlets, including on air.
  • Contribute to regular service audits with colleagues and stakeholders to review core output.

    Qualifications

  • You will have excellent written and spoken Somali and English language skills.
  • Good knowledge of Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Twitter particularly around posting formats and best practice, engagement and technical issues.
  • Evidence of sound editorial and community judgement as well as an understanding of the power of online communities.
  • Experience of creating high quality copy and create assets (images, gifs, video) that can be used across social media channels in accordance with channel priorities.
  • Strong editorial judgment and a solid understanding of journalistic ethics and libel laws.
  • An understanding of the broader digital landscape in Africa and a proven interest in keeping up to date with developments in social media.
