1. ActionAid International Kenya Campaign Assistant - Financing Girls Education through Fair Tax Jobs in Kenya


Location: Johannesburg or Nairobi ActionAid International Hub

Duration: Fixed Term 10 months contract (until Dec 2017)

About the role
We’re looking for a passionate social justice activist with strong communication and administration skills to support our Education, Tax Justice campaign, and Communications team colleagues to achieve ambitious goals in our project calling on governments to finance quality public girls education through tax justice.

About you
As Campaigns Assistant you will help coordinate and deliver capacity-building, alliance-building and advocacy events. You will get involved in the production of external campaign communications as well as the publication of social media outputs.

This will involve drafting briefs, preparing content, and purchasing materials. You will also work with national project countries to ensure communication materials meet their needs and contribute to the overall project strategy and goals. You will also assist with campaign monitoring and evaluation, and share information and learning to improve effectiveness where needed.

Of graduate calibre you must demonstrate a strong interest in campaigning and be able to show previous involvement in campaigning actions and campaign or communications planning. You will have experience in researching, fact-checking and writing for an external audience.

Highly organised with administrative experience, you will have an eye for detail as well as good PC and communication skills. A team player with good interpersonal skills in organisations you will have developed an aptitude for digital media and be passionate about being part of a dynamic team. Experience in organising events would be an advantage.

About the project
Education is a fundamental right for all children. Yet around the world there are 124 million girls and boys out of school today. More money would really help. But global companies are dodging billions of dollars in taxes in developing countries.

It would take only a fraction of that lost amount to help fill the global finance gap and send all our children to school. In this project, ActionAid is working with school girls, youth, parents, teachers and civil society allies in Malawi, Mozambique, Nepal and Tanzania to ensure they have a strong role in holding their government to account in ensuring free public education of a high standard, financed through greater government support and increases in fair tax revenue.

2. ActionAid Communications Manager Jobs in Kenya

Reporting to the Head of Policy and Campaigns, the Communications Manager shall be responsible for the review, formulation and execution of AAIK’s Communications Strategy, coordinating and managing the development and production of communications materials for organizational, policy, programme initiatives and partnership capacity support functions.

In this capacity, the incumbent works closely with the organization’s senior management, with unit managers, Partnership Support Unit (PSU) in developing appropriate communications packages for use by staff and partners

Key responsibilities will include the following;
  • Review, formulation and implementation of communication strategy, policies and procedures to provide information, education and communication support to AAIK and partners;
  • Organizing and coordinating corporate and public relations events, press releases, media liaisons, conferences, and press briefs on the AAIK’s programmes and activities;
  • Support staff in building partner capacity in media relations to give people living in poverty and exclusion a platform to raise their concerns on rights issues and secure public knowledge and awareness on the issues;
  • Support staff in strengthening partner capacity in developing and publishing of documentaries including success stories, annual reports, policy papers and news briefs on thematic human rights issues relating to women and people living in porter;
  • Management of corporate branding, production and distribution of in-house newsletters and other public publications to raise public awareness on the organizations mission and vision;
  • Providing proactive public relations and enhancing the corporate image of the AAIK;
  • Coordinate the development of policy briefs and strategies that inform stakeholders about the policy position of ActionAid and partners on key issues concerning women;
  • Advising the management on key public relations issues;
  • Maintain and uphold documentation, branding and profile of AAIK;
  • Train staff in basic interpersonal, public relations and communication and client- relationship management skills;
  • Support the process of systematic collection of stories of Change and case studies by engaging partner organizations and PSU
  • Maintenance and updating of information on the HIVE and website in liaison with the international communications team;
  • Support internal teams in the development of key messaging for resource mobilization and programme activities;
  • Publishing project documentation
  • Monitoring all public comments about the organization and providing appropriate responses;
  • Perform any other lawful duties that you may be assigned from time to time.

    Eligible candidates for the position will be persons who have:
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, Communications, Public Relations, Media studies , Journalism or their equivalent from a recognized University;
  • Postgraduate diploma in Journalism for candidates with a non-journalism degree;
  • Have at least seven (7) years’ experience in developing and implementing Corporate Communications programmes of which at least three(3) years must have been as Communication Officer in a comparable position with similar responsibilities in like organizations;
  • Is a member of a professional body such as Public Relations Society of Kenya(PRSK)

    Key Competencies
  • Excellent working knowledge of MS Office, desktop publishing graphical designing through adobe Photoshop Suite, Dreamweaver, freehand, illustrator, InDesign and Quark Xpress;
  • Familiarity with the standards of writing, copy editing, and proof reading;
  • Ability to improve written content with attention to detail;
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Excellent Script and Speech Writing Skills; and
    Assertive and team player.
