Title: Senior Researcher /Senior Lecturer position in Agricultural Economics, Markets and Trade

Summary: The Department of Agricultural Economics at the University of Pretoria, South Africa, with support from the International Food Policy Research Institute, has established a three-year contract position for a Senior Researcher/Lecturer.
The position is a three- year, fixed-term, renewable appointment, based in Pretoria, South Africa starting on January 1, 2007.
Under the direct supervision of the Head of Department at University of Pretoria and the IFPRI Division Director (Markets, Trade, and Institutions Division) and in close collaboration with other staff as appropriate, the candidate will conduct research and analysis on the issues related to agribusiness and agricultural markets, and will be responsible for developing and leading projects related to the study of changing food systems in Southern Africa.
Of high importance in the region are issues related to increasing consolidation and concentration in food processing industry and organized retailing through different institutional designs of vertical and horizontal integration (for example: contract farming, farmer associations, etc). The researcher will study the implications of such fast changing food systems on the small farmers and other poor households, and will research on the design of policies that can
help them to exploit these emerging opportunities.
The work will
developing a clear conceptual framework for understanding
possible channels of impact,
organizing field research in the region (including farm surveys and interviews with various participants in the food marketing channel),
data analysis, preparation of research reports,
dissemination of the results to policy makers and other
stakeholders in the region, and developing research proposals in collaboration wit IFPRI.
The candidate will also be linked to IFPRI's Africa strategy and will therefore also liase with the NEPAD office in Johannesburg.
The candidate will also be expected to supervise postgraduate
students and also teach selected modules in the postgraduate
programme in agricultural economics at the University of Pretoria.
Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics or Economics;
Significant experience with quantitative research methods and data analysis of large household databases.
Excellent drafting skills and analytical mind.
Excellent econometric skills on cross-section and
panel data analysis.
Research experience in policy analysis and policy dialogue.
Minimum of two years of work experience since the completion of the PhD
