PhD Animal Welfare Objective Measures

The development of this multi-institute initiative presents the opportunity for a number of stimulating and challenging PhD projects for suitably qualified applicants.

The research aims to bring a strong scientific focus to understanding and measuring the welfare of farm animals. Two PhD projects are offered, one with sheep and the other with beef cattle.

Each research project will examine the perceptions of animals of their requirements for food, shelter and rest, using a combination of physiological and behavioural approaches.

The sheep project will be conducted primarily in New Zealand, and the beef cattle project in both New Zealand and Australia. To be undertaken at non-Australian institutions.

This scholarship is offered once only to 2 people. Open for applications until October 31, 2006.
