Position Title: Training Expert

Grade Level: Short term consultancy

Duty Station: Nairobi, Kenya with frequent travel to Somalia

Organizational Unit: FAO-Somalia

Duration: 1 month Consultancy

Anticipated Start Date: As soon as possible

He/she will work along with the recruited local NGO, which will facilitate the training.

In particular:

  • Working together with the recruited local NGO draft a 40 unit training curricula for FAO review and approval prior to training including evaluation forms at the end of the trainings
  • In collaboration with the approved local organization translate the training curricula into Somali language once revised by FAO, and provide at least 50 books (25 in English & 25 in Somali) of the approved curricula
  • Facilitate 6 days training
  • Evaluation of the training by each trainee in English language must be provided to FAO
  • Submit a narrative final training report

    Minimum Requirements

    Education:

  • Master’s Degree or equivalent in Business Administration, Project Management or related field.

    Work Experience:

  • At least three years of professional experience in providing trainings in fish production, processing operations, Business skills and entrepreneurship.

    Languages:

  • Working knowledge of English.

    Selection Criteria

  • Extent of experience in relevant trainings.
  • Experience of community level planning and participatory activities.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with the UN system is an added advantage.
  • Knowledge of Somali language is an added advantage.

    Position Title: Junior Application Developer – PHP/MYSQL

    Grade Level: SC 3

    Duty Station: Nairobi, Kenya with potential travel to Somalia

    Organizational Unit: FAO-Somalia

    Specifically, the incumbent will use Using PHP/MYSQL/AJAX and other programming languages, design, develop, and implement a data/information tools to efficiently collect, store, analyze, and distribute data and information, he/she will have the overall tasks of;

  • Research existing FAOSO tools (FMT, BITS, FIDS, ABCD, D-Space, others) to establish whether existing open source software can be utilized.
  • Review output formats to better understand expected outputs from the system (to be received from technical managers).
  • Work with other application developers to establish the changes, bugs, and enhancements for the applications.
  • Liaise with other application and database developers to ensure the application is integrated into the FIDS and current central database system
  • Assist in development and implementation of the application in consultation with the information management officer, the team leader, the database programmer, the FIDS application developer, and others.
  • Receive input from the above-mentioned staffs and modify the application where necessary and test its applicability to ensure it conforms to the specifications and, prepare the necessary technical documentations for the application.
  • Arrange weekly meetings to receive feedback from above-mentioned staffs and monthly meetings with end users (technical managers).
  • Bug test software to ensure its reliability and stability.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

    Deliverables:

  • After 1 MONTH: software enhancements to the FMT software (as per documentation which will be developed during first week)
  • After 2 MONTHS: software enhancements to the FMT and RC software (as per documentation which will be developed in the 4th week).

    Minimum Requirements

    Education:

  • University degree in Computer or Information Science or a related field, or compensated by additional years of experience or by specialized training in web application development.

    Work Experience:

  • At least 2 years of experience in web application development

    Languages: Excellent knowledge of English

    Selection Criteria

    Knowledge of the following Computer Languages:

  • Frameworks: basic CodeIgniter fine.
  • Scripting: PHP, HTML, JavaScript, Ajax
  • Database: MySQL, PostGreSQL

    Position Title: Natural Resource Officer

    Specifically, he/she will carry out the following duties:

  • Carry out preparatory work and information gathering related to the development of the FAO Somalia Natural Resource sector including, data and information collection, reports and other studies gathering, logistical support, etc.;
  • Support the office of the Officer in Charge with daily environmental related tasks including responding to Somali ministries needs, through attending to partners, following up on pending requests, etc.
  • Contribute to and support the implementation of environmental projects supported by FAO Somalia and ensure high quality work delivered;
  • Carry out capacity building needs assessments and prepare action plans and advice FAO Somalia on the best way to support Somali line ministries including developing and implementing environmental training short courses; software and hardware needs, monitoring of ongoing environmental projects, etc.
  • Provide technical contributions, carry out activities and analyses to support the development of a FAO programme on environmental conservation, with a particular focus on sustainable development.
  • Participate in the environmental review and screening of programmes and projects, including the implementation of environmental impact assessment guidelines;
  • Assist other sectors in reporting their contributions to the Millennium Development Goals; specifically focusing on Environmental Sustainability (MDG-7), and ensure environmental mainstreaming as well as emerging environmental issues;
  • Act as Youth focal point and facilitate mainstreaming of youth involvement in FAO Somalia programmes to ensure that the voice and needs of the youth especially those from marginalized communities are take into consideration;
  • Participate in meetings, make presentations as related;
  • Perform any other related duties as required.

    Minimum Requirements

    Education

  • A university degree in environmental science/ Natural Resources, social sciences or a related field.

    Work Experience:

  • At least 3 years of relevant experience in global environmental issues, natural resources management and other social, environmental and institutional aspects of natural resources management.

    Languages:

  • Working knowledge of English (level C) with good interpersonal and communication skills (English language).

    Candidates will be assessed against the following

  • Relevance of academic qualification
  • At least 3 years of relevant experience in environmental analysis or natural resources management;
  • Extent of knowledge and experience in global environmental issues including in international organizations, national governments and NGOs
  • Proven ability in planning, organizing and delivering quality results and meeting deadlines, and in working independently and in multi-disciplinary teams
  • Demonstrated analytical skills and effective oral and written communication skills in English
  • Demonstrated ability to work as an effective member of multi-disciplinary/ multicultural teams

    Vacancy Announcement No: FAO/13/2012

    Position Title: Veterinarian Officer

    Grade Level: SP 3

    Duty Station: Mogadishu, Somalia

    Organizational Unit: FAO-Somalia

    Anticipated Start Date: 15th May 2012

    In particular, s/he will:

  • Be responsible for the overall management and implementation of the project;
  • Ensure smooth coordination with the FAO, the Ministry of Agriculture and other ongoing intervention activities in south central Somalia response to famine;
  • Prepare work-plans for and provide technical support related to all three components of the project;
  • Work closely with the FAO Livestock team in formulating the contractual arrangements (Letters of Agreement);
  • Provide guidance to the line ministry and field officers for the development of national protocols and guidelines with specific reference to the emergency interventions;
  • Be responsible for preparing a detailed Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) plan and closely monitor the progress of the work;
  • Plan achievement of project objectives and impact in line with the implementation arrangements and obligations of the approved project; implement corrective measures when needed;
  • Participate in the selection panel for the recruitment of staff/NGOs who will constitute support project implementation;
  • Ensure adherence to field security procedures of all staff and consultants involved in the implementation of the project;
  • Prepare reports of field visits and an end-of-assignment report;
  • Prepare a draft terminal statement using FAO standard format with inputs from other consultants and in consultation with the FAO OiC in Somalia, for review by the lead technical officer and ECTAD Officer and final clearance by AGAH before finalization and submission to the Government, as per established procedures.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

    Minimum Requirements

  • A Bachelors degree in Veterinary Medicine
  • At least 2 years of progressively responsible practical experience of animal disease surveillance and monitoring systems , clinical and diagnostic procedures of Trans-boundary Animal Diseases
  • Good knowledge of laboratory equipments; practical experience in animal diseases, data management, training on animal health related topics and report writing (English Language)
  • Must be a Somali National.

    Selection Criteria

  • Veterinary Medicine degree / animal production degree is a full requirement with qualifications in the areas of animal health;
  • Extent of practical knowledge and experience in Disease Surveillance Systems;
  • Extent of practical knowledge and experience in training on animal health and understanding of disease diagnostic procedures;
  • Extent of both oral and written communication skills, including ability to write reports;
  • Good working knowledge (level C) of English and knowledge of the duty station language.
