Africa Union Scientific Awards

Africa Union Scientific Awards: The Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology in partnership with the Africa Union invites applications from outstanding Kenyan scientists to this year’s African Union Scientific Awards Competition.

This Programme is designed to celebrate the achievements of African scientists and to promote efforts to transform scientific research in Africa into entrepreneurship, attract investments and create research centers of excellence.

Eligible applicants are expected to have attained exceptional achievements in scientific research, new scientific discoveries and scientific accomplishments.

In addition, the applicability of the scientific work to Africa’s challenges will be considered.

The awards will be presented in each of the following two scientific sectors:

  • Life and Earth Sciences; and
  • Basic Sciences, Technology and Innovation

    The Awards will further be made in the following categories;

  • Category 1: African Union Young Scientist National Award worth USD 5,000
  • Category 2: African Union Women Scientist Regional Award worth USD 20,000
  • Category 3: African Union Scientific Award worth USD 100,000.

    Award Application Eligibility Criteria:

  • The competition is open to Kenyan citizens only
  • Category 1 targets young scientists, who will be less than 40 years
  • Category 2 targets excelling women scientists
  • Category 3 targets outstanding African scientists
  • Patentable innovations are encouraged
  • The innovator should be an individual
  • Inventions clearly identified as serving military purposes are not eligible for these awards
  • If applying for more than one category, separate application forms are required.
