In Uganda, ZOA has offices in Kampala, West Nile (Arua), Acholi (Nwoya), and Karamoja (Amudat). ZOA Uganda works both in relief and recovery on the themes of food security & livelihoods, WASH, primary/accelerated/vocational education, and conflict management with a special focus on land security.

About the position

The Project Coordinator, with support from the Project Manager, is responsible for planning, coordinating and implementing the livelihood activities under the Support Programme to the Refugee Settlements and Host Communities in Northern Uganda (SPRS-NU) in the target districts and settlement areas.

Main Responsibilities

  • Implements project activities in relation to livelihood activities to achieve optimal project outputs and outcomes in line with ZOA/donor procedures and targets;

  • Ensures quality implementation of the ERI/PAED modules;

  • Supports TOTs and Project Field team members in supporting farmers to form and strengthening groups;

  • Ensures TOTs and Project Officers conduct post-ERI follow up to support groups to start viable enterprises and operate independently;

  • Supports the formation of Producer Associations (PAs) including establishing the leadership structure, constitutions, by-laws, registration with the Community Development Office and opening of bank accounts;

  • Oversees the implementation of the competitive support to ensure viable and best business plan are awarded;

  • Works with the Market/Business Coordinator to ensure PAs, groups and enterprises started through competitive support are linked to input and output market;

  • Supports Project Officers and TOTs in the formation of quality VSLA groups;

  • Ensures strong weekly monitoring of the saving groups to strengthen and mature saving groups for linkage to formal financial institutions;

  • Ensures implementation of all forestry activities are in line with agreed approaches and procedures;

  • Supports TOTs and Project Officers to conduct timely and regular monitoring of trees planted to ensure high survival rate (the least 70%);

  • Conducts post distribution for all input distributions to ascertain inputs given are planted or used for the purpose they are provided;

  • Ensures quality training of stove making and follow up of adoption by other members;

  • Works with the field staff to make sure ideas generated and tested by innovative committees are relevant to enterprises
    selected and results disseminated to the areas;

  • Strengthens the culture of innovativeness among the field staff.

    Reporting

  • Provide timely and accurate written monthly reports;

  • Identify, document lessons learned and best practices;

  • Prepare and submit well written success stories;

  • Contribute to annual reports and implementation plans;

  • Organize efficient and effective monitoring and data recording systems of activities in the project under the livelihood component;

  • Provide verbal and written reports to PMU or ZOA Kampala when required

  • Ensure data are collected in timely manners and entered in to the data base for easy retrieval’.

    Representation and coordination

  • Actively participate in the SPRS-NU technical working groups;

  • Participate in settlement livelihood coordination meetings;

  • Serve as livelihood focal point in the target districts and settlement areas.

    Human Resource Management

  • Supervision of (Senior) Project Officers and other staff as assigned;

  • Ensure the livelihood staff have weekly and monthly targets;

  • Conduct weekly or monthly meeting to achieve targets;

  • Conduct staff appraisal/evaluation as per ZOA’s policy;

  • Provide technical support through coaching and mentorship of staff for quality implementation of livelihood activities.

    Procurement and finance

  • Initiate timely purchase requisition of project goods/services;

  • Ensure expenses are in line with approved budget;

  • Provide appropriate codes for expenses.

    Qualification, Knowledge, Experience, Skills, Attributes and Abilities

    Knowledge & Experience:

  • Degree or Diploma in Agriculture or other relevant field;

  • At least 3 years successful experience in a similar position implementing livelihoods related projects;

  • Working experience in refugee settlement settings;

  • Management and staff supervision experience;

  • Understanding of the West Nile context, culture, and languages as an added value;

  • Excellent spoken and written command of English.

    Skills:

  • Good communication, writing and facilitation skills;

  • Innovative, creative and enthusiastic;

  • Provides regular feedback, acknowledges success and need for improvement with supervisees;

  • Coaches, challenges and provides opportunities for growth.

  • Good computer skills: Ms Excel and Ms Word;

  • Self-motivator, able to work with limited supervision;

  • Ability to drive a motorcycle with valid driving/riding license.

  • Able to work under pressures and meet deadlines;

  • Based in the programme area field office (Rhino Camp sub-office).
