About the position

  • The Biodiversity Adviser will be responsible for the day-to-day management of TRUE-FISH Component 3.3 activities in Uganda.

  • As an aquaculture scientist with specialist knowledge of fisheries and aquaculture genetics & breeding, the post holder will provide managerial and technical advisory support for WorldFish’s activities at Lake Victoria Fisheries Organization (LVFO).

  • A key aspect of the position will be to facilitate the co-ordination and discussion with partners and key stakeholders, to ensure successful and timely deliverables of project outcomes, and that milestones are met. Based at the Program Management Unit at the LVFO Offices in Jinja, the incumbent will work closely with the LVFO Director & TRUE-FISH Coordinator as well as the FAO Chief Technical Advisor at LVFO.

    The successful candidate will be responsible to:

    Managerial responsibilities

  • Ensure all relevant financial, human and scientific resources are mobilized by WorldFish in a timely and effective and efficient manner for the implementation of the activities under the component.

  • In consultation with the WorldFish and the implementation partners, to draft and present the detailed work plan for the project, to include the scientific research to be undertaken under TRUE-FISH (within the parameters set out in WP 3.3.3.).

  • Draft WorldFish contributions in respect of inception and other TRUE-FISH reporting requirements (quarterly and annual reports).

  • Draft and present for approval of the LVFO Working Group (WG), the terms of reference for additional technical assistance and training inputs under this component, and to support the implementation of these activities, monitor their performance and ensure that results of an appropriate quality are received.

  • Ensure coordination of activities under this component with other TRUE-FISH Components and other relevant interventions within the region.

  • Develop and implement an M&E system with associated indicators of achievement, lined to the Logical Framework Table.

  • Ensure the implementation of WF policies and values in relation to gender, human rights and anti-corruption.

    Technical
    responsibilities


  • Advise the LVFO Working Group (WG) on Fish Breeding, Genetics and Biodiversity Management in Aquaculture (WP3.3.2).

  • Provide scientific, managerial and logistical support for the implementation of the scientific research programme under (WP3.3.3).

  • Advise and provide scientific input to the preparation of an EAC Regional Biodiversity Strategy for aquaculture, and the preparation of appropriate model instruments for adoption by the LVFO (WP3.3.4).

  • Advise EAC member states on the adoption and implementation of regional strategy and models (WP3.3.4).

  • Organize and deliver training activities (where appropriate) and to participate in the Biosecurity study tour (WP3.3.5).

    Requirements

    This job is open for individuals with the following skills and qualifications:

  • A PhD in Genetics / Animal Breeding / Fisheries Genetics or Post-doctoral experience in aquaculture.
    Knowledge and/or experience of working with the fisheries and/or aquaculture industry, and genetics in relation to fisheries and aquaculture.

  • Knowledge and experience of working in developing countries in Africa and/or Asia.

  • Experience developing and facilitating meetings and workshops in a complex environment.

  • Strong publication record in a related field.

  • Highly motivated for high quality science and delivery of applications/impact from research.

  • Experience in project management and resource mobilization.

  • Experience of supervising staff.

  • Excellent proficiency of spoken and written English.
