World Food Programme Medical Officer Jobs in Nigeria


Responsibilities

  • Provide evidenced based primary care to all eligible family and staff members as established by WFP Ethiopia Country Office;
  • Provide first-aid and advice to staff and their recognized dependents;
  • Perform diagnostic and laboratory tests such as: ECG and rapid laboratory (malaria RDT, urine dipstick, etc.);
  • Rotate/rove to duty stations where there are WFP sub offices to provide medical attention and reporting on the health status of staff and local (emergency) medical support options;
  • Administer outpatient treatments;
  • Assist in the follow-up of previously diagnosed chronic medical conditions for which treatment has already been started;
  • Provide early detection in mental health cases and arrange referral to appropriate specialists to facilitate proper treatment and follow up support;
  • Dispense medications properly, in line with international standards and reviewing instructions with patients;
  • Perform medication, injection, dressing, stitching, minor foreign body extraction as needed;
  • Initiate IV fluid therapy in case of dehydration or other medical conditions;
  • Consult with the Coordinating Doctor when a given presenting problem goes beyond scope of practice/experience
  • Participate in weekly peer review meetings with Head Doctor to review clinical cases;
  • Maintain an organized electronic medical record of patients supported by a regular backup;
  • Maintain strict confidentiality with regards to patient’s medical records, patient management and treatment;
  • Assist in coordinating and providing essential clinical information for medical evacuations to Coordinating Doctor or WFP
    Doctors as needed;
  • Assist in providing medical support during evacuation and repatriation;
  • Advise evacuees on the requirements for evacuation and/or escorting patients if needed;
  • Document case findings in secured Electronic Medical Records;
  • Be available and on-call for consultation;
  • Determine patient disposition when necessary (e.g. continued observation and primary treatment, referral, medical evacuation or other);
  • Plan and implement health promotion and illness/injury prevention training campaigns for WFP employees in coordination with the WFP Wellness Division;
  • Facilitate referral to appropriate qualified specialist or to other qualified hospitals/private clinics, as required;
  • Ensure preparedness of staff travelling on missions or reassignments, including administration of appropriate vaccines, instructions on malaria prophylaxis and other travel-related ailments;

    Qualifications

  • Education: First level university degree in medicine from an accredited/recognized institute, licensed university medical education program. License and registration to practice as a GP. Advanced university degree (Master’s level or above) in public health and/or health-related fields or Post graduate studies or specialized training in emergency response is desirable.
  • Experience: At least 5 years of clinical experience in Family Practice Medicine and/or Emergency Medicine. Having excellent clinical judgment and experience in health education and community/public health campaigns would be an added advantage.
  • Language: Fluency in both oral and written communication in English. Knowledge of the local language is added advantage.
