World Bank Environmental Specialist Jobs Opportunities in KenyaResponsibilitiesParticipate as team member in the preparation and/or supervision of environmental safeguards policy requirements in different Bank funded operations, including participating in identification missions; supporting implementation of safeguards policy requirements and seeking opportunities to integrate sound environmental management and policies in various investment operations; maintaining regular dialogue with the client and enhance their capacity on environmental policies; and contributing to Aide Memoires.
Seek and develop opportunities to integrate sound environmental management and environment safeguards policies in different investment operations, participate as a team member in such operations and related analytical work, and enhance local capacities for implementing these policies.
Contribute to and participate in quality reviews within the Region and provide environmental input in project documents in accordance with the Bank operational policies including Concept Review, Appraisal and Decision/Negotiations Packages.
Facilitate and maintain effective communication with the Government counterparts and local partners, Non-Government Organizations (NGOs), civil society, the private sector as well as specialized international organizations in line with the Bank’s Access to Information Policy and need to harmonize with clients and other International Financial Institutions (IFIs) in the region.
Participate in and/or possibly lead natural resource projects and the policy dialog with the government and other stakeholder relevant to environment or natural resources in Kenya. This includes coordination with other financiers, review of sector policies, strategies, and legislation.
Coordinate and carry out other tasks as requested by the relevant Practice manager such as contribute to the organization of training or knowledge sharing events.
Advanced degree (Masters or higher) in environmental economics, environmental science/engineering, natural resources management or related field, preferably with major in one or more of the following areas: environmental institutions or policy, environmental health or pollution, forestry, biodiversity or climate change.
A minimum of 5 years of full-time relevant professional experience in the environment sector.
Knowledge and experience in one or more of the following areas: environmental management, environmental sector policy, or integrated development planning or climate change mitigation or adaption, in various sectors (e.g., water supply and sanitation; transport, energy, natural disaster management, rural development, environmental pollution and health).
Experience working in middle income countries; understanding of the institutional and political context and exposure to the national environmental policy challenges.
International work experience would be an advantage.
Proven teamwork and successful experience working with multi-disciplinary teams.
Demonstrated project management / operational skills and familiarity with Bank procedures and business practices including occupational health and safety management and the WBG safeguard policies would be an advantage.
Experience working with a wide range of stakeholders, NGOs, private sector international organizations, development partners and/or with the government will be an advantage.
Fluency in English is required (writing, speaking, listening and reading).
A strong sense of team work and ability to work independently with limited supervision.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Willingness to travel extensively in rural areas of Kenya if necessary.
Competencies of Environmental Specialist:
Knowledge and Experience in successfully applying the environmental safeguard policies and high risk projects, especially infrastructure projects, in sectors such as Energy, Transport, Agriculture, Urban and Water Infrastructure.
Applies technical knowledge on the job and provides inputs to country and sector strategies. Interacts with clients on technical level.
Environmental Policy, Strategy and Institutions - Basic understanding of environmental policies, strategies, institutions, and regulations, specially related to climate change.
Business Judgment and Analytical Decision Making – Under direction of senior staff, gathers inputs, contributes to risk assessments,
and provides information relevant to assessment of decisions affecting internal and external stakeholders.

World Bank Environmental Administrative Assistant in Kenya
Support to the Resource Management Team in processing accounting and administrative transactions for the country office; and ensure that all transactions are made in compliance with the Bank’s policies and procedures and the required documentations are fulfilled before processing the transactions.
Process purchase orders, purchase requisitions, goods receipts and direct payments vendors-ensuring that VAT exemption procedures are adhered to.
Liaison between the vendors and the WBG in matters pertaining to bank details, vendor detail updates, status of payment, etc.
Assist in asset management tasks including physical verification, maintenance, recording, monitor movements and in asset disposal activities.
Handle routine ePayable data entry pertaining to non-PO payments, filing of accounting documents and Resource Management records.
Process online internal purchase of office supplies and consumables.
Follow up contracts and ensure that payments are made properly and timely as per the terms and conditions and close contracts after verifying that all payments due are paid and any unutilized balance will not be paid.
Review and manage any long outstanding contracts or items and follow up timely settlements.
Undertake ad hoc inquiries in standard and non-standard databases, retrieve, manipulate and present accounting and administrative data as needed from time to time.
Assist in availing required documents for Internal audit, Score Card and Quality Assurance purposes.
Assist in FY-Closing processes, in line with the Accruals Accounting concept.
Process STT/STC Travel Requests and expense claims.
Perform other tasks assigned by supervisor with respect to the Country Office program and act as a back-up to the Country Office Accountants.
A professional accounting qualification at Intermediate level and above will be a distinct advantage.
Working knowledge of SAP is an added advantage. Proficiency in use of computer applications (such as Microsoft Office applications, Outlook etc.).
Sound organizational skills and ability to prioritize and deliver assignments as required and ability to work under pressure and to meet tight deadlines.
Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work with external vendors to provide high level services to the office.
Working knowledge of policy and procedural requirements and application in processing transactions and the relevant internal control components.
Strong English language skills (verbal and written).
Strong interpersonal skills; commitment to team-oriented work in a multi-disciplinary matrix management environment.
Personal initiative, resourcefulness, effective time management, organizational skills and ability to handle confidential information.
Ability to follow through on team priorities in the absence of the supervisor, and respond to client requests.
Ability to pass relevant Bank Group tests in transaction processing.
Ability to resolve transactional issues requiring interpretation of policies and procedures
