Wildlife Conservation Society Conservation Pilot – Okapi Wildlife Reserve Jobs in Rwanda;The Conservation Pilot will support protected area managers, notably in the Okapi Wildlife Reserve, to carry out surveillance and monitoring flights as well as logistical support flights. They will manage aviation activities for the WCS DRC program, working closely with the WCS Aviation Program team and supervising a small team of observers and assistants.

Major Responsibilities

Piloting

  • Safely pilot aircraft (PIC) for logistical support, park operations, and resource protection.

  • Strictly adhere to procedures for all flight operations.

  • Ensure all aircraft documents are up to date and compliant with aviation laws.

  • Participate in regular flight and safety management training.

  • Maintain detailed flight logs including passengers, purpose, and duration.

    Aviation Operations

  • Oversee aircraft management and maintenance to the highest standards.

  • Maintain aircraft cleanliness, security, and readiness.

  • Train staff on aviation safety procedures.

  • Manage survey and surveillance equipment.

  • Oversee aviation stocks (fuel, oils, supplies) and procurement planning.

  • Manage aviation facilities (office, stores, hangar) and airstrip condition.

  • Coordinate aviation logistics with project managers
    and law enforcement teams.

  • Manage aviation operations finances in collaboration with finance manager.

  • Participate in planning meetings and develop annual aviation plans/budgets.

    Aviation Safety Management

  • Implement WCS Standard Operating Procedures in all operations.

  • Report safety concerns, incidents, and hazards.

  • Contribute to WCS Safety Management System.

  • Conduct regular internal evaluations of aviation operations.

  • Report aircraft issues through established procedures.

    Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Current US FAA commercial pilot license with instrument rating.

  • FAA second class medical certificate.

  • Minimum 400 hours PIC flying experience under FAA regulations.

  • High‑performance piston engine time required (C206 or similar preferred).

  • Experience in Africa, especially francophone regions, an advantage.

  • Experience with wildlife surveys, anti‑poaching surveillance, and bush flying preferred.

  • Experience flying under FAR Part 135 and/or FAA A&P license an advantage.

  • Strong cross‑cultural communication skills (oral and written).

  • Willingness to live and work in challenging, remote locations.

  • Fluency in English and French required.
