    Job Description

    Whiz Kids Workshop, founded in 2005, is an Ethiopian-led, innovative social enterprise that focuses on improving the lives of children and youth through educational media.

    We believe that mass-media is the most cost-effective and immediate way to spark young imaginations and make an impact on education.

    We use existing research on mass-media education, new lower-cost technologies for media creation, and the wide reach of television, radio, print and cell phones to put that belief into practice.

    Our content covers topics that include literacy, health education, character building and social-emotional learning to prepare children and youth for success in life.

    Whiz Kids has produced three television series that inspire, engage and empower Ethiopian youth age 3 to 18, including Involve Me, Little Investigators, Tibeb Girls and the award winning show Tsehai Loves Learning.

    In addition, Whiz Kids Workshop has published over 100 titles of children’s books in over seven mother tongue languages in Ethiopia.

    Major duties and responsibilities of the Chief Operating Officer include:

  • Provide general support during project planning/design, monitoring and project management.
  • Increase annual profit and impact of the organization significantly
  • Review/analyze project reports and provide feedback as per approved proposal and budget.
  • Conduct field visits to projects in Ethiopia and other countries in Sub-Saharan Africa to monitor implementation of projects, assess local situations and resources and network with Government and non-government stakeholders. Prepare and share field visit and meeting reports.
  • Attend and present on selected technical cooperation meetings/conferences in Ethiopia and abroad, prepare notes and undertake follow-up actions as required
  • Engage with Government and non-government actors to promote “Tsehai Loves Learning” and “Tibeb Girls” regionally and solidify partnership.
  • Hire new employees and monitor employee performance, hold bi-weekly or monthly company meetings and develop short and long-term goals.
  • Review strategic plan, annual budget regularly and ensure annual goals are met
  • Ensure all departments are executing tasks as per annual plan and strategic plan
    Conduct annual and quarterly planning and implementation review meetings with staff, partners and stakeholders
  • Present timely
    and relevant reports to Whiz Kids Board, donors and other stakeholders
    Design big size proposal, bids and contracts that are in line with Whiz Kids vision & mission
    Document and present data driven result of each department performance every month to the CEO
    Approve of select financial decisions
    Job Requirements

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Educational Requirements: Master Degree in business administration or other business related field preferred, or 3-5+ years of equivalent experience.
  • Background in financial management or administration.
  • Fluency in Amharic and English, including written and oral communication skills in both languages.
  • Ability to work in teams and work effectively, independently and as part of a team that is widely dispersed.
  • Expectation and willingness to perform and coordinate administrative duties
  • Ability to travel frequently throughout Ethiopia and internationally if required to occasionally.
  • Strong communication and listening skills.
  • Being analytical and strong problem-solving skills.
