Vétérinaires Sans Frontières Suisse(VSF-Suisse),www.vsf-suisse.org is a politically and religiously neutral humanitarian organization focusing on preventing and alleviating suffering, disease and hunger, and contributing to socio-economic development and sustainable environment, in areas where livestock, agriculture and related issues play, or could play an important role in peoples’ livelihoods, food and nutrition security and resilience.
VSF-Suisse works both in humanitarian aid and in long-term development in seven countries of West and East Africa.Four exciting positions have arisen in our Kenya Programme. Compensation will be aligned with the VSF-Suisse rates for the respective position.
These roles require applicants to have the right to work in Kenya. Priority will be accorded to qualified applicants who reside in the targeted project locations. VSF-Suisse does not charge any fee at any stage of the recruitment process for the advertised position.

Duty Station: The position will be100 % field based in Western Kenya

Reporting to: Project Manager

Expected Start Date: 01 August 2022

Duration: Six(6) months but will be subject to annual contracts based on acceptable performance and availability of donor funding

Overall Responsibilities:

The position holder will be responsible for the implementation of an oncoming animal welfare and food safety activities along the poultry value chain in Bungoma, Kakamega, Vihiga, Kisumu and Siaya Counties, currently under negotiation.The project aims to improve incomes and employment opportunities for youth along the value chain.

Key Responsibilities:

Under the supervision of the Project Manager, the position holder will:

  • Oversee the implementation of the project activities based on the activity logframe and approved work plans.
  • Carry out training needs assessments with poultry value chain actors on animal welfare food safety/poultry meat hygiene and document the outcomes through written reports
  • Facilitate and coordinate all poultry welfare and public health services activities.
  • Facilitate community dialogue meetings for project awareness creation and general community sensitization and document the outcomes.
  • Develop training curriculum and facilitate training sessions for poultry value chain actors on poultry welfare and food safety/poultry meat hygiene and document the outcomes through written reports.
  • Collect information on poultry health and welfare, including disease outbreaks and monitor local poultry disease situation.
  • Prepare and timely submit high-quality project progress reports according to donor requirements.
  • Represent VSF-Suisse in the livestock sector/food security meetings/County stakeholder meetings.
  • Prepare and submit project imprest requests and periodic field work plans based on the project logframe
    and budgets to the supervisor for processing.
  • Organize periodic team planning meetings and share information on daily and weekly progress on project implementation.
  • Liaise with community leaders, local government officials, NGOs, UN-bodies and other partners wherever appropriate and required.
  • Maintain daily communications with the country office on all issues relating to weather, security, project activities, staff movement and welfare issues,

    Qualifications, Experience & Skills required

  • Adaptability and flexibility: Ability to manage a large workload and multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines.
  • Degree in Veterinary Medicine/Animal Health Science. A Post-graduate training in the same or related field would be desirable
  • At least 5 years working experience in veterinary/livestock programmes as a field practitioner in, but not restricted to, smallholder setting in the rain-fed high agricultural potential areas.
  • Demonstrate practice and understanding of animal welfare issues
  • Experience in carrying out assessments, baseline surveys, monitoring and community participatory evaluation exercises.
  • Experience in gender sensitive participatory approaches in community development work
  • Excellent organizational, managerial and report writing skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, interpersonal relations, and conflict resolution abilities
  • Excellent computer skills and demonstrable track record of managing a successful team•Ability to work in multicultural team and strict adherence to rules, regulations and guidelines•Person of integrity –honesty and good moral standing
